Hi hopefully a simple question for you.
I have recently tried two recorders ...

    Technika DVR-2005
    Chili DVR-8500x

These are obviously cheaper brands but I have a question about recording.
Are all DVD recorders noisy when recording??
These models obviously have a pc dvd-writer inside cos they make the same fanlike noise when recording as a pc one does.
Are all recorders like this or do only the cheap models have pc dvd-writers inside??

By the way for the price these are good machines

  3. Inside these DVRs, are chip sets from a few companies. One of this chip sets can be very hot, when the chip is capturing and encoding. Thus the DVR makers put in a small fan to keep it alive.

Most japanese venders use their own chip sets, and cost 20% or more. But you have more choices.

DVD recorders appear to be getting quieter - but aren't as silent as a VCR. The Panasonic E-20 that I have had noticeable fan noise when new....and still does. It doesn't affect the operation, though.

Panasonic E-55 is much quieter, smaller, etc.; but doesn't have the heft and solid build of the old E-20.

Maybe some day they won't need fans.

  5. The fan noise came from the fan used to deal with the heat. The heat is generated by intense computation. Just like P4 overheat when you run a high utilisation % application.

Real-time capture and ecnoding need a lots of CPU/Hardware horse power. Remember P3 and Old P4 can't even capture mpeg2 without dropping frame ?

    But my question was....
Do all DVD recorders have noisy fans? or just the cheaper ones

  7. Look at the back of the DVRs, if there is a fan, then you most likely going to hear it go off, during recording.

If you want to aviod this, then pick the lower end model of JVC, Pioneer, or Toshiba.
