Ahhhh.... it seems like such a simple task...
I have two files both .dv presumably a video and an audio stream (although they are nearly the same size which seems odd) I got these from a client who is shooting with a cannon xl-2 (I think) onto one of the fancy HD recorder things - which I guess he had set to record as raw wrapperless .dv files... which in someways is smart as he is on a mac and I am on a PC. BUT... I can't seem to convert the files to .avi.
I am going crazy... the only app I've heard of that can do this is...
FireStore DV Conversion Suite
http://www.focusinfo.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=8
I have access to Premiere Pro 7 and Vegas 6... neither will recognise the .dv files...
I've also tried Tmpgenc, and a slew of others freeware/shareware apps...
I've also tried changing to extension to .mov and .avi just in case... To this point I can't get anything to even recognise the files.
I refuse to believe there is only one program on earth that can do this simple conversion - which is really just adding a header to the file...
Any help would be appreciated...

Have you tried VirtualDub with a DV codec like the Panasonic DV codec installed? And I don't know if Gspot would work to identify the filetypes, but you might give it a try. Use Gspot 2.52.

I just installed the panasonic DV codec and virtualdubmod still doesn't recognise the files...
I tried premiere again too... no luck.
can final cut pro read .dv files? Can FCP export a windows .avi?

I was under the impression that Quicktime Pro could do the DV conversion but I haven't done it.

You could always do a Mac to PC IEEE-1394 transfer or copy to tape and transfer back. -
I hope you at least have iMovie HD.
Import this DV file into iMovie and export (share) it as a highest quality quick time movie (*.mov) and then you try to use this mov file with the programs that you are talking about.
Might be silly but did you just try changing extension on PC to avi from DV? It worked for me during iMovie 3 period for transferred video to iMovie from handycam
