Just goes to show that when your number is up, your number is up.

I actully saw a real simular event where a bread van lost about three feet of axle and a set of duals like that while taking a corner. A group of us heard the truck bottom out in time to see the assembly go flipping and bouncing towards another group of workers. It was funny afterwards, but for about five seconds each one of about six guys thought that they were dead. We are talking a couple of hundred pounds bouncing 10-15 feet into the air and changing directions every time. Whew!

The guy in the vid is lucky that he didn't get killed. The speed of the tires makes me think that alot of the energy was spent before it hit him. Maybe rare, but this kind of stuff happens and usually happens fast.

Be nice to your wife and kids, you never know when the last time you see them will be.

something almost exactly like this happened to a coworker of mine. A truck was on traveling on the highway by his house, and apparently the axle broke on the trailer. The wheel and tire traveled about 300 feet up hill and smashed into his wife's car parked in the carport. She was only a couple of minutes away from getting in to the car to go to work...
    just a thought

I like how the attendant was more concerned about the pump and the hose than the bloke with two broken legs
    If in doubt, Google it.

The pump and hose posed a very serious IMMEDIATE hazard. One of the first procedures in first aid is to move the victim away from the hazard, or to remove the hazard.
The guy survived the tire, but I doubt he would have survived a gas station blowing up.

Was the hose torn? If it was, this is not even an issue. The pumps have a safety system that prevents fuel from dispensing if a hole is detected in the line.

    I prob. would be too

Make sure the hose is not pumping gas or broke & leaking, it's bad enough without going up in flames

So if the handle broke and was pumping gas, how would it know you were not just holding the handle
Many a time i have seen the safety kickback not catch and fuel just kept pumping out onto the ground with the nozzle still in the fuel port

I won't fault her too much for putting the nozzle back. It could have been leaking, and the pump was atleast still running even if it wasn't leaking or flowing. Keep in mind that PANIC mode is a weird state of mind and sometimes what looks like panic at real speed is often the best that could have been done when it is reveiwed in slo-mo.

There was, a few years ago, a good example of this at I think a soccer stadium fire. The TV news reported mass panic, but after the fact and slo-mo reveiw of the video footage it was clear that it was not mass panic. People were actually thinking enough to cover themselves with their coats and help others over the rails to an area of greater safety

I've seen retread cause serious injury alone. Just recently in a paper here, 2 teenagers were walking down a major street. Retread came off and cut across the chest of 1 of them and sliced the arm of the other. The one with a chest wound was in critical condition for quite a while. The other kid was released from the hospital the next day.

That was just retread flying off a truck at 50MPH.

It was witnessed and they caught the truck driver.

From what they said about the first kid, it probably wouldn't have been surprising if it did slice it off. I see the retread on the sides of highways all the time. A truck doing 75 with a moderate size chunk come off and put some serious dents and scoring to the hoods of cars.
