  1. Is there a way to make an avi or asf file better quality maybe by converting to another format or some other method?

  2. Depends what you mean by better quality. Just increasing the bitrate won't make your video better than the source file however playing around with various filters can make a video appear better by taking out some of the rough spots.

You'll see a lot of advice in these forums much of it limited to two applications; VirtualDub and Tmpeg. While both are good, they only represent a fraction of the video editing universe. Other tools can take you further. My favorite full blown editor right now is Vegas Video III from Sonic Foundy. It is getting rave reviews and even getting the attention of die hard Premier users.

Judicious use of sharpen and blur filters combined with proper color balance, adjustment of gamma, saturation, levels, and minor tweaking of brightness and constrast can make an otherwise poor video acceptable and a good video stunning. Unless you have a DVD burner and want to play your finished files of a DVD player expect to lose some crispness and pixelation is just an accepted fact unless you are dealing with very high quaility souce files.
