What are you using to play the RM with? If it's RealPlayer, dump it and use Real Alternative player or anything other than RP. RP may be the cause of your popups.

You could also use the popup stopper on the newer versions of IE.

With all you have said, then the popup is probably from a adware program installed in your computer. You may need to update your anti-adware programs and try to delete it. What is it doing or what is it called? You should be able to do a Google search for the name and come up with a cure.

It also sounds like you need a better anti-adware program to keep that sort of stuff off your computer. SpyWare Blaster and Spybot S&D are good preventative programs. Both freeware.

Trend Micro has a good on-line scanner for finding programs like this. Eiwdo is another freeware scanner that does a good job. Some of these adware programs have to be removed by booting in safe mode. They can be very persistent.

Hmm... I guess RM files can contain automatic links to a webpage, like ASFs can. (Probably WMV, too.)

I don't know what the relevant setting would be in the latest version of RealPlayer; the version on the system I'm using right now hasn't been updated past v8 Basic, so...
Anyway, I just checked it, and under the View menu, Preferences > Content, there's a section that's named "Web browser," with the following:

"RealPlayer clips can contain links to Web pages. Some links are launched automatically during playback."

(checkbox) Enable automatic links (preferred browser drop-down)

...So, it might be a good idea to check RealPlayer's settings, to see if there's something like the above enabled.
