    Hello,

I'm getting the following popup almost everytime I open any folder containing vids, specifically avi files. The popup error message generally pops up twice in a row if I try to open a avi file. When I click "ok" twice, it goes away and the video opens, but the search feature is quite sluggish. I've had this happen before and it went away on its own but for some reason it's back. I ran AVG, ad-aware, and spybot and those programs found nothing. I'm hesitant to use registry mechanic becuase I don't like tamporing with my registry. Obviouslly there is something wrong here because of the 0 MHz. I checked bios and there are no errors found. Any help?

I guess you have some problem with the explorer thumbnail preview, you can try disable it by
Click on Start -> Run and then type
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

To enable it again you just type
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

I disabled hardware acceleration and that has fixed it so far.

Yes, that temporarily fixed the problem. Last night without thumbnails enabled, the popup still appeared twice when I opened a .mpg.

I've searched for many hours on what this problem could be but I haven't been able to come up with a answer.

Somehow, Windows is using a broken codec for generating the thumbnail, or DirectShow itself has run into some problem. This usually is "cured" by turning thumbnails off, (which is a good thing to do anyway, as Windows has a tendency to lock the AVI, and making it impossible to move or delete it using the regular means). Maybe reregistering quartz.dll is the cure this time? It seems to do magic with odd media related errors.

I had asked a friend today and he told me he had the same problem. He did say it was something codec-related. However, I have turned off my thumbnail preview but it still pops up when I open the avi or mpg. I have to close it twice before it won't return.

    How do I reregister quartz.dll?

I don't know if this will have any bearing on the situation but I have 2 quartz.dll. 1 is in system32 and the other is spelled in all capitals and is part of motorola phone tools.

Well, turning off the preview only fixes the problem with the preview, not problems with playback (when you open AVI/mpg).

    Ok, I deleted the 2nd quartz.dll

I checked and I have directx9.0c and quartz is 9.5 (I have SP2) so all that seems accurate.

    I ran this regsvr32 quartz.dll

    Anything else?

    oh god no packs, lol.

I just have koepi's xvid and vidx codecs installed...that's all I swear

I did re enable thumbnails and changed view to thumbnails and it popped up nonstop for a while. It just drives me nuts to not know what this problem stems from exactlly.

As it's not related to a particular codec (both AVI and mpg behaves the same) it must be in some more fundamental level of the media playback chain.
Try Codec Sniper, and see if it reports some troubles. If not - I'm out of ideas.

alright, well thank you for trying though.

I did uncheck "enable write combining" in advanced>troubleshooting (where I disable hardware acceleration) and that seemed to fix the problem for now anyways, lol.

The problem is that I like to play video games and I need hardware acceleration enabled to play them. I do notice with hardware acceleration enabled, I always get a text document "divx_signa" and some letter after it. If I have to I'm going to uninstall MPC and just use VLC which is kinda a shame because I like MPC.

try opening divx settings and seeing what options are checked. there is one you can turn off that will stop the error but i can't recall what i turned off. check that you have the latest version also.

Well, this is the weirdest thing but I found out that I do not have divx codecs installed on my pc. I don't know how my divx files were being played with MPC. I thought for sure I installed it but I only could find Koepi's Xvid.

Later this week, I'll download the divx codecs. Thank you for the information.

Ok, I downloaded Divx Codecs 6.6.1

Could anyone tell me what option I can uncheck to stop the error?

Ok, this is weird but I'm still getting the same error. It happens exactlly twice for any video that I left or right click on. I thought that was strange. I'm determined to figure this out.

I used codec sniper and got rid of some codecs. The only codecs I have installed are Koepi's xvid and divx. This message was happening before I had the divx codecs so I know it's not that. Please any help?

I've tried changing AVI default player to VLC and that didn't help.

Now, even when I simply change the name of an avi that error message pops up twice.

Anybody have any other ideas what this error message could be?

A broken component in Windows video (or even possibly audio) rendering chain. Which I can't tell. Update DirectX?
You get the error as soon as you highlight it (no matter what you're trying to do, like renaming or deleting or moving or...), as Windows at that point is trying to extract some info from it, and failing.
Like I said earlier, as the problem arises regardless of video codec (both mpg and AVI behaves the same) it's some fundamental part of the DirectShow system that's out of whack, and not some specific codec.

Yes, when I highlight, click..etc...it usually appears.

The weird part is that it says my cpu is 0 ghz.

Hm, something interesting perhaps. I tried opening avis that I got the popup error on with VLC and I get an error message dialog box...it just says unable to open and then a few folders and then the file name.

I used gspot and it says that DX50 codec isn't installed.

I have the latest divx codecs. I'm not sure but I think the problem is that so many of the vids I have utilize different divx codecs.

I really think the wrong CPU speed reading is unrelated, but then - who knows? Have you tried (re)installing DirectX?
I'd guess the final solution would be a complete OS reinstall. At times that's the only solution to this kind of problem.

How did you open it with VLC? Right click and selected VLC, or started VLC and used File->Open?

I associated VLC with AVI in folder options in explorer.

Then just double clicked the file.

That will surely trigger the error, yes, as you're clicking the file and Windows is trying to read from it, possibly locking it so the player can't get access.
Start VLC, and open the AVI with VLC instead.

well, I've certainly noticed that alot of the codecs I need are not there. This is pretty strange. I found another codec I need called CRAM, lol...never heard of that one.

Ok, I've went ahead and uninstalled all the divx. So, I only have Koepi's xvid installed.

How should I get dx50 codecs for previous versions of divx w/o having to download all the divx junk?

Basically, all you need is ffdshow - not DivX, not XviD - ffdshow takes care of decoding 99% of all popular video codecs. Encoding is another business, but that's not the issue right now.
But then again - I'm confident this is not a codec problem. It's deeper down in the DirectShow layer.

You're absolutely correct about directshow being involved in this problem.

I just installed directx10. I believe I was at 9. I didn't restart my pc but when I switched my videos from tiles to thumbnails, that error popped up twice of course. Drives me freaking nuts.

I actually would be happy to download ffdshow but I have a huge collection of videos and I like to have the preview thumbnail option.

Do you know of anyway around that?
