I tried DVDFab decrypter and DVD Decrypter on this disc. When I loaded it into Recode or Shrink, the file size shows it's larger than DVD5 and all the sliders for adjusting the compression ratio are pegged to the left so you can't adjust it to fit the disc. What am I doing wrong here?

This is the way the structure is shown in Recode:

    DVD
    Menus
    English
    Menu 7 00:00.56 11MB 76.5%
    Menu 8 00:00.56 11MB 73.0%
    Menu 9 00:00.56 11MB 72.1%
    Menu 10 00:00.00 1MB 75.3%
    English
    Root Menu 00:00.00 1MB 16.4%
    English
    Root Menu 00:00.00 1MB 16.4%

    Main Movie
    Title 2 03:51.23 4,691MB 70.2%

    Extras
    Title 1 00:00.36 11MB 63.3%
    Title 3 00:06.56 252MB 70.7%

    Unreferenced Material
Title Menus (no value) 1MB 16.4%

This is the way the files are listed on the original disc:
    VIDEO_TS.BUP 20KB
    VIDEO_TS.IFO 20KB
    VIDEO_TS.VOB 114KB
    VTS_01_0.BUP 22KB
    VTS_01_0.IFO 22KB
    VTS_01_0.VOB 33,774
    VTS_01_1.VOB 17,132KB
    VTS_02_0.BUP 126KB
    VTS_02_0.IFO 126KB
    VTS_02_0.VOB 114KB
    VTS_02_1.VOB 1,048,404KB
    VTS_02_2.VOB 1,048,404KB

"Shrink" it twice ... not a preferred solution, but should work. Burn copy to RW disk to check quality on player before committing an R disk

  3. You would think DVDShrink could transcode in one pass, considering the size of the files. "Unreferenced Material" is suggestive. Run the DVDFabDecrypter output through FixVTS. Then open the "fixed" files in DVDShrink. If that solves it, there's your answer. It means there was structure protection and Fab left junk behind.

    You may find this interesting:

Ok, I ran Shrink output to hard disk files, then loaded that output into Shrink again and that appears to have worked. Seems strange that it couldn't do it the first time.

I also tried the other method, using FixVTS on the output of DVDFabDecrypter. I'm not sure if I used it correctly though. I dragged one of the .vob files into it and then chose Full DVD. When I loaded the "fixed" files into Shrink, the unreferenced material was gone but when you tried to Backup it gave an "out of memory" error and said something about an "invalid parameter". I also tried Recode2 on the "fixed" files and it also gave an error.

    Thanks,

  5. It might help to know the title of the DVD, then one could check for reports on it in various forums.

Anyway, your result with FixVTS is unexpected, to say the least. Since it's hard to use it incorrectly, I'll assume you didn't. All it does is remove unreferenced material and other "junk". OTOH, there's a long track record of DVDShrink not liking decrypted files from DVDFabDecrypter. Like here for instance:

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=62897

If you read the link I put in my previous post, you know that DVDShrink is used in the PgcEdit backup method for checking the integrity of a DVD's structure. DVDShrink is picky about that. Shrink may error out immediately on Fab files complaining of invalid navigation structure. It may go awhile and then error saying out of memory. Probably other ways too. Usually FixVTS will allow DVDShrink to do its job.

Look, lots of people swear by DVDFabDecrypter, But you can do the same thing with DVDDecrypter by having it ignore read errors. I can't find the reference right now, but I believe Fab does 4 retries, then places dummy sectors. If you want a clean copy, do the PgcEdit method. Yeah, you can do it lots of ways and your backup will still work on a standalone, but there it is.

I'm not making this up. Fab produces "dirty" files.

    It ignores read errors.

The advantages of DVDFabdecrypter are: easy and free. The disadvantages are obvious.

Now, having said enough to get me tarred and feathered...

I'll just say that the title was one from my adult collection and leave it at that. LOL

Actually, the original probably isn't encrypted but I'm not sure. I just ran it through the decrypter first to make sure. I'm very new to this as I just got my system built about a week ago and this is the first DVD burner I've had.

I appreciate the information and will look at the links given.

    Thanks,

So your problem *IS* dirty files, then. :P Sorry.

I'll make one final guess. Defective/scratched disc. DVDFabDecrypter inserted dummy sectors, DVDShrink didn't like it. (Recode is Shrink's first cousin, same author.) No idea why FixVTS didn't work.

Oh, and welcome to an interesting hobby.

Just for the heck of it I re-ripped with DVDDecrypter. The unreferenced material was gone, but Shrink still could not compress it all the way on the first pass.
