    I have a video clips that required this form of codecs but i dont know where to download it and Windows Media Player doesn't automatically download it.

    It may be this codec, x264 VFW and CLI Codec, but I wouldn't bet a standalone player would play it.

    If it is and you need to play it in a software player, the newer versions of ffdshow may work. If you follow the link above and then to their 'Main tool site', they have lots more info on the codec.

    If you install a new version of ffdshow over an old one, does the new version retain your settings from the old version? Or do I have to reset them all after upgrading?

    Or do I have to uninstall the old version before upgrading in the first place?

    Yep, ffdshow or CoreAVC. Both can decode AVC and both support that fourCC. Got nothing to do with DivX by the way, Your audio is AC3 to if you have problems with that. Tell whoever encoded it to stop using avi to store avc to. If they want to use x264 and AC3, I would suggest mkv as a container.

    You can install over the top. Unless it is a really old version, then you could have problems.

    On the left of this page under sponsors you'll see Free Codecs, have a look there. They have the codec, Haven't used it and don't know if it will work with windows media player,maybe worth a look.
