    I bought a BenQ DVD writer (DW 1620) one year ago and have been writing DVDs using the Sonic software, without any problems. Now suddenly when it writes the DVD it stops during the final burning process (the bar stops basically one block from the end). I have used two different types of DVDs with the same result. It does however writes on my one rewritable disc. Is this a hardware problem and can this be fixed, or should I buy a new DVD writer?

    My 1620Pro is "on it's way out" too after about 1 year. Now it only burns +R discs with DVDDecrypter(ISO Images)....and I burn at 4x....8x MAX.

    It never was very good with my -R discs anyway...and I use Taiyo Yuden -R's too.

    So you are also thinking that I should consider a new one? Any suggestions?

    Have you tried to use another program to burn, because sonic isn't good at all. I had nothing but problems with MYdvd from sonic. Try burning with decrypter or another burning software to rule out sonic as the problem before you spend $$. If you do go for another burner benqs 1650 is sweet with the new software it has that detects what speed it can burn a disc at to get optimal quality. Even the worst media being used can come out as if it was burned on TY or MCC, just may take longer to burn depending on how bad the discs are....

    My1620 is still going @ 100% have never had a problem with it.

    I'm getting another LG.
    My old LG4040B is still going strong....so the 4167B is looking like my next drive. I'd love to get a Pioneer but I need bitsetting on certain DVD's that I send to a family member back home.

    Uninstall the sonic before you try another burning software. The BENQ 1650 is a good drive as already stated. You'll be able to use QSUITE 2.1 with the drive to get better write strategy. With the 1620 you can only enable WOPC. Check out the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for more info.

    I'm considering a LG 4167 drive for a small form factor pc that I built since their drives are shorter than a Benq 1640 & 1650. But I've read some problems that the drive may have like power supply issues. As with any other drive manufacturer their are quality control issues.

  7. I really like my 4167B and have had no issues. I think the power issues normally appear on builds where multiple hard drives and optical drives are in use or in upgrade situations where older/weaker psu's come into play. Several threads in the CDFreaks LG forum explain different symptoms to watch for. Usually the symptoms are immediate and typically manifest themselves in media recognition issues - but not always. This is a very short compact drive - slow read/rip but quiet during read (good for htpc use). The fastest 16x writer I have (under 5:40 using MCC004). It does get a little noisey during 16x P-CAV writing. One somewhat odd thing about this drive, it will not write dvd-r at 12x. I often like to write MCC 03RG20 at 12x and that is not an option with this drive.

    Hey Budz - how do you like the Benq 1650? I've been a little disappointed with mine - probably because my expectations were too high. It's a very good drive - just not quite the sensation the 1640 was I suppose.

    Funny you should mention that! I had a odd occurance with the 1650 last night. I was burning several DVD-R's TY @8x spd when suddenly the burner would only burn one TY disc at 4x spd. All the other discs were burned at 8x spd. I don't know if that had something to do with the media itself. I've had odd stuff with one of my 1640's as well which I narrowed down to the spindle of VERBATIM 16x DVD-R being faulty or something. Because the same discs can be burned at 8x spd in another 1640 drive that's in another other pc.

    I haven't flashed the 1650 with the latest firmware just yet. Are you using the latest firmware BCFC? Why the disappointment with the 1650?

    Still using BCDC - wanted to try some things before I flashed to BCFC. Don't take me wrong - not bad disappointed. It does everything well. I am sure I just expected too much is the real problem. My main disappointment has been with TYG03 and MCC 03RG20 (DVD-R 16x) media. Has been better with 8x media in my testing. I may have gotten better results if I had refrained from so much experimentation with SB - WOPC - etc. I think I will clear everything out - flash to BCFC and start testing all over again.

    It is a very good all-around drive. I expected it to be the best at something but it just hasn't delivered yet. BCFC may be the key. My LG is more consistent with lower PIE/PIF. Both my Pio's are better with TYG02 and Yuden000 T02. Both Liteon's (even my NEC) are better readers. I do like the ability to get jitter values but in all fairness the 165H6S is a more trustworthy scanner. I admit I have not had enough time to draw conclusions yet though. I was more curious what you had to say about yours.

    I just flashed my 1650 to BCFC. I'm using DVDRB PRO right now and after that's done I'll burn a SONY 1-16x DVD-R TY disc with the 1650 then scan to see what kind of results I get.

    That is exactly what happens to my 1620Pro with 8x -R TY's.
    Mine will start off at 8x but drop to 4x while burning....then most of the
    time the disc ends up a coaster.

    There was only one TY 8x spd disc that burned at 4x spd which was with my BENQ 1650 drive.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Both were burned & scanned with 1650.
    All I know is my old LG 4040B burns all discs at it's rated speed...which is 4x.
    My BenQ 1620Pro refuses to burn 8x -R discs @ at least their rated 8x speed....so the BenQ must be replaced.
    I am by no means a speed freak and I have NEVER burned DVD at above their rated speed...but when I can't burn genuine Taiyo Yuden 8x -R's @8x....in a burner rated at 16x....bye bye BenQ.
    My old LG is also a much more reliable and versatile CD burner as well. I liked the BenQ for the most part...had I figured out it's problem burning -R media I would have loved it.
    Thanks for all the comments. I tried writing with DVD Decrypter, it progressed nicely, the bar went up to 100%, but then the programme got stuck with finalizing the disc. It does look like hardware now, would you say (Sonic and DVD Decrypter unable to finish??)
    Are you using media that is from a spindle known to work for this drive in the past? My reason to ask is that this problem could be media related. If you feel comfortable that the media is fine, then your drive must be failing. Before you go out and buy a new one, try flashing the firmware. You have nothing to lose at this point. Chances are probably remote but you never know!
    Nice scans - especially the Yuden000 T02. Pretty similar to what I was getting except you show less jitter on the TYG02. My problems were almost exclusively with 16x media and primarily TYG03. I did some research last night and I think I may have run across what was giving me erratic results. I had solidburn on for known and unknown media. During the learning phase I think I probably attempted underspeeding (12x) to see if it would yield better results. Apparently this is a big NO-NO!!! Never burn at anything but rated speed while using SB for known media. I'm gonna clear out everything and flash with BCFC. I'm pretty sure my problems were created by my own lack of knowledge of Solidburn.
