Is it possible for me to reauthor a DVD menu only without having to redo the entire movie?
Here is the deal.I have a DVD on my HDD ( VOB, IFO files ) The menu on it is not so good. For one, the movie is 16:9 but the menu is 4:3 It is also very ugly. Background is ugly.Buttons are ugly. It's just plain ugly.
It my buddies band and he tried his hand at making a DVD.The DVD is really good and all, but the menu creation is bad and was asked if I could redo the menu.I said I could just re-author the whole thing from source, but thought maybe could see if there was a fast cheat way first.
Now I know I can just start from the source files, but since I have the DVD files right now here with me, im sorta looking for a fast way to do this.
So, what I am looking to do is re-create the menu only without having to re-author the DVD in it's entirety.

There are a few different tools and methods to do this. From simply demuxing the video and audio and creating a new menu, to trying to replace the menu. Tools to look at include IFOEdit, PGCEdit, DVD Remkae Pro amongst others. Look them up in the tools section, then look under each to see what guides are available. I suspect you will find something that suits.

Generate a basic dvd using dvdauthorgui (it require's one small title)

This can be the dts logo , demuxed into m2v and audio using vobedit .

Menu design's using the gimp , save as jpg , use dvdauthorgui to convert this to m2v , and import as menu , add audio if you want .

Make all audio the same as the title's format ... otherwise dvd player may freak out ... best if all is ac3 , above 96kpbs , 48khz (use besweet) .

Add all required button's needed , and author to folder .

If your title dose not have the required ifo's , use ifoedit to regenerate these from you title's vob's .

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pgcedit ... open title dvd on hd , then left click on title now in window , right click on it , choose "import menu" from dvdauthorgui project folder .

You connect the dot's .. edit nav command's and button nav command's .

Save , and play project , if error , go back into pgcedit and fix issue ... only when it play's correctly is it ready to burn to dvd .

Out of curiosity, how complicated is the menu, and how many menus are there? Is it just ONE main menu with "x" buttons to different chapters -- or does it have multiple levels of menus and Title/Chapter Buttons

The reason I ask is that you might take a different approach depending on the complexity of the Menu/Navigational Structure of the original DVD.

p.s. at first read, it sounds like you are dealing with a simple one-menu dvd, but just wanted to make sure...

The menu is not at all much.I have a top menu and it alows the selection of chapters.
So, the MAIN has a PLAY ( to play all ) and a small image to click to see the chapters to select ( only 3 chapters ) and on that is a PLAY and GO BACK

I can tell it was done with TMPGEnc DVD Author by the layout and images it has as I have used that many times. So if you know that software, you can probably guess the layout(s) you can use from within it.
