  1. It seems like this would be a common thing, but I can't ever find good info on a straightforward practice.

I have a PC with one of those nice little Hauppauge video capture cards. I run my DirecTV receiver right into it and reccord shows. It stores the video in MPEG2 format.

All I want to do is take one of these files (.mpg) and turn it into a DVD. That means converting it into .vob files. But I don't care about menus, or chapters, or any "overhead". I just want a simple process that will let me play them in a DVD player.

I don't want to degrade the video quality *at all*. It's my understanding that DVD's use MPEG 2 video anyway, so I don't even see why I should have to re-encode the video. Isn't there some way of converting a .mpg into the requisite .vob files and then just burn them to DVD?

I'd really appreciate feedback on this. Oh, BTW, I have to be able to do this in Mac OS X alone.

NeoDVD is a simple program that works every time, never crashes, and is the fastest program I have ever used.

    Easy.

Demux the mpg with ffmpegX or MPEG Streamclip (if you have the Quicktime MPEG2 component) or with Project X if there are data breaks in the stream, and then author as a DVD using Sizzle.
Go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave. Or check into a psycho ward, whichever comes first, eh?

If your MPEG-2 recordings are in DVD compatible specs (resolution, bitrate), then Toast will author them as DVD without re-encoding them. It might be wise to set Reencoding to Never.
ffmpegX also has an MPG to DVD tool.
