I'm attempting to edit my personal dvd movie collection to be "clean" for my family. I am wanting to have these clean versions viewable on our Microsoft Zunes. I already have "imtoodvd" ipod convertor software which works great to rip and to port my movies to the Zunes. However, I have found little on editing scenes from certain films. Just to make clear, these are MY movies and NOT rentals of any such thing! Does anyone have any suggestions on software, preferably open-source or otherwise?

Unless you shot them, it is still illegal under US law to do what you want to do. You do not own the movie when you buy a DVD, you just own a piece of plastic and rights to watch what is on it. That's it.

That said, what you want to do is time consuming and of dubious value. There are plenty of posts on home censorship of DVDs.

If you must, I would recommend Womble Mpeg Wizard. It is a fast, stable mpeg editor that can also edit AC3 and Mpeg audio (so you can just blank out swearing instead of cutting the scene). If you don't need to ability to output a DVD structure then avoid the DVD Wizard version, which appears to be substantially slower when outputting mpeg files than the Mpeg Wizard version.

    Short process flow

Rip with DVDFab HD Decrypter. Movie only is probably best.
VOB2MPG to get a single Mpeg file fo editing
    Edit with Womble Mpeg Wizard
Convert to Zune format with whatever floats your boat

In the interests of equal air time, you might also consider

VideoRedo - many swear by it. I have found it to be very flakey in the interface, and damned ugly as well.

Mpeg2Cut2 - Haven't used it. This would be the Free option.

My sincere thanks for the info. I look forward to taking you up on the "time consuming" nature of my "dubious" intent, but I figure that a family has a right to view a "family" movie without the non-family content that saturates the media. Oh well. Anyway, greatly appreciate your suggestions!!! Look forward to posting the results.

    Hi,
Gunslinger has given you great suggestions, I would alternately suggest using DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD and ripping the Main Movie with no file splitting (in the DVD Decrypter settings) that way your movie will rip as one contiguous file instead of adding a step to join it later. The caveat is AnyDVD is not free but if you backup movies regularly it is very handy and can be used as a seamless front-end to other apps like DVDShrink and Nero Recode. MPEG Video Wizard's little brother MPEG-VCR is great for just cutting out scenes and commercials etc. it is also very stable and much more lightweight than MVW. However both products are excellent values. Best of Luck!
