I would like to backup/rip my DVD movie to be on my computer. I would like to use DivX codec to make the movie into .AVI file, with DivX codec.

I had tried several softwares, but I dont think I found any great one that give the good quality output yet.

I would like the program to be able to:
    - crop the movie, so there wouldn't be any black bars on top/bottom of the movie (so it won't be 4:3 when I ripped the widescreen movie)
    - selectable output size, because most of the time I am getting problem with having 2GB output file size, or something like that.
    - auto-select the movie's resolution would be great. Because in order to make my movie same aspect ratio as the DVD, I must make the ratio 4:3 -- and if I *could* crop the movie, I might need to know the resolution for real movie part, excluding the black bar.

I would like to know which program could do those requirements

    Thanks in advanced,
    Nattawat

AutoGK result in nearly 7 hours of conversion, and it failed or something - because there is no video file made, only audio. I only found the MP3 of the movie...

For FairUse Wizard, is it possible to let it open DVD folder off from harddisk instead of opening it off from DVD drive?

  6. AutoGk needs the pro version of divx because it nees so called B-frames.
Maybe you have the free version installed.
What you should do is: go to the advanced options tab select xvid, which by the way is free and you should be fine.

All the apps mentioned previous are fine, but AutoGK gives you far the best results.

I would really prefer DivX. I am trying to copy this one into my Creative Zen Vision - which supports DivX but I'm not sure about XviD. I would also like to have it in my computer also that's why I would like to have it as best quality in DivX as possible.

    OK, I finally had a try on avi.NET, here's what I got:

    Routine - [playMovie]

A problem occured in initializing MCI.
That's the problem I got. Plus it took like ages to open one .VOB file (that is 0.99GB) -- and I cannot multi-select the files, how could I ripped the whole movie then?

EDIT: So far, FairUse Wizard works best for me, except that it could only open from DVD, not from harddisk.

I still cannot use avi.NET because of that problem, and I start to feel annoy that FairUse could only convert 1 file, and cannot add a que or something like that. If I want to have 3 parts seperate, I must have to open the program and load DVD for 3 times in order to get 3 files.

If there is some program that is like FairUse Wizard, but could also open from harddisk, and can create multiple files, and obviously could crop - that'd be great.

Rip with DVDDecrypter, IFO mode, set file splitting to none. That should give you one whole file for the movie. Most DVD to AVI converters needs you to rip to HDD first.
