I have tried everying in the forum to get this to work and still no luck. Im not sure if it is even possible anymore. If you need more info or anything just post and ill tell. I really want to get this to work!
Goal to burn an svcd.
ATI tv tuner saves mpeg2 files with mp2 ext. They are not naturaly svcd compliant so I understand they must be encoded.
TMNGEnc will not open the file. I have the mpeg 2 plug in for TMPGRenc.
I try to simple multiplex the file but I get the error "illegal mpeg video stream"
Rename the *.mp2 file does not help.
What am I missing..plse repond.

I'm shocked nobody answered you...
The solution is to run it through DVD2AVI, and open the project file in TMPGEnc instead (make sure you lead the VFAPI plugin, it's on the TMPGEnc site).
DVD2AVI will spit out a video project file, and a de-multiplexed audio file. It will have a delay marked in ms. Remember that number.
NOW: Here's where I keep going.
Open the .mpa audio file in Winamp, use "disk writer" plugin, and make it into one HUGE .wav file. If you leave it at mpeg audio, TMPGEnc will mess it up when it tries to re-encode. WAV to MP2 audio works best.
All you have to remember then is to go into "source Range", and apply an audio offset to match what the original delay is.
Hope that makes sense... -
Plus, I saw something on "tools" that's a codec for TMPGEnc to open MPEG-2 directly... however the way I told you is more fail-safe, and isn't as time-consuming as it sounds.

Ready for a weird answer?
Load the MMC File Player, open an MPEG-2 file in it that was created by MMC (any file will do) & just click stop. Now load TMPGEnc (leave the MMC File Player open) and it will open the MPEG-2 file now.

I installed DVD2avi and the vfp plugin for tmpgenc.
I can save a project file in dvd2avi, but when I try to open the .d2v file tmpenc says that it is not a valid file format.
Any ideas?
Also renameing the file does not appear to work.
The plan to open the mmc file player and then tmpgenc did not work either but thanks for the tips -
This is actually quite simple.
After you capture and before you save the file rename the file extension to mpg. I realize this does not change the integrity of the file but editing programs will accept it as opposed to them not accepting it when leaving the mp2 extension. If you have already saved the file as an mp2 extension then simply rename it as an mpg file.
ATI does not capture mpeg2 files as true SVCD compliant files. You have a couple of options.
First... you can demux/mux the file and save it as an SVCD file. TMPG works ok for this but good luck if you do any extensive editing or cutting. The result is usually alot of problems with a/v sync issues. TMPG is readily availvable and if you play around with it enough you might be ok.
Second...you can try this -
1. Capture in MMC 7.1 as an mpeg2 file. Save with the mpg extension.
2. Edit your file in M2-edit pro. This is important because ATI captures mpeg2 files with 4 streams. A video stream, an audio stream, a padded stream and most importantly a "private stream". M2-edit will fix any a/v sync issues your capture file may have because it is the only program I have found that addresses the "private stream" that ATI seems to create. Other programs seem to ignore this "private stream" and a/v sync problems are the result.
3. Demux/mux the file you cut/edited with M2-edit in Mpeg2vcr and save the muxed file as an SVCD program file.
4. Burn
The entire process takes minutes because there is no subsequent encoding of the original capture file. The results have proven successful to me hundreds of times.
The downside is the M2-edit pro and Mpeg2vcr are expensive programs. But they work and save hours. The quality for me with a digital source is outstanding. The entire process is real time and works great.

I am curious if you just opened the MMC File Player or opened it and opened a *.mp2 file in it.
I had the same problem that you did some time back. I found an article on vcdehlp explaining the same method I explained above & it worked for me. I also tried just openeing the MMC File Player, but this did not work. I had to open a *.mp2 file. It does not have to be playing, just open. I can open it and then click stop. Once I do this, TMPGEnc recognizes the file.

THANK YOU jwhitlow!!!! for a simple solution to a pain-in-the-@#$% problem!! Read some of the other solutions to solving the ATI MMC mp2 problem in this thread, and you'll quickly appreciate jwhitlow's simple and easy solution.
I tried it and TMPGEnc opened the file up! I then compressed it using TMPGEnc's SVCD template, and it played fine on my Philips DVD-711 after burning with Nero.
However, the sad reality is that CATURING DIRECTLY TO MPEG (even mpeg2) is a poor substitute for going from AVI to SVCD or VCD. Could it be my encoding with the SVCD template from TMPGEnc after capturing with ATI MMC as mp2 caused some degradation of the video? Anyway, it's great to know I can use my SVCD setting in ATI MMC because the digital VCR lets you set up captures like a regular VCR. I won't ever get up at 3am to record a television program, no matter how badly I want to see it!
Thanks again jwhitlow !! -
Capture with vdub using huffyuv, much better than any mpeg 2 formay that mmc provides. I am an ATI fan but not for their mmc capture codec's, but I do like the direct vcd 2.0 capture for quick and dirty captures.
