  1. I've recently purchased a new set of
    Verbatim x16 dvd-r media (id: MCC 03RG20).
i then burnt a dvd on an lg 4167B dl11 firmware.

after the burn ive popped the dvd into
nero dvd scan and got 100% good sectors...

still, when i look on the recorded surface (dye side)
i see some "circles" on the dye... when i burned
a diff dvd (lg x8 dvd-r id: lge08) the surface seems
smooth and "uniform", however here... there
are some kind of "circles"... usually 3 or 4...

    is it speed related?
if so, should i burn a lower speeds or
its "just like this at x16" and should pose no prob?

    thanks

I've been buying the Verbatim 16x DVD-R discs alot lately due to the low price (when on sale a 50 pack is about $15.00 U.S. Dollars).

They are just about as good as Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs in my opinion.

I do however burn them at 4x (if multi-tasking) or 6x (if leaving the computer alone).

I never burn more than 6x or my buffers go all "crazy" and I don't like that ... I get that over 6x even with Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs. Go figure *shrug*

    I have a Pioneer 108 burner.

So in short try burning a bit slower.

My lg4163b will do that if I burn at max speed. You can see where the speed changed. No read errors though.

Those are zonal rings. They are precise and perfect circles, usually 2-4 of them depending on burn speed. This is how modern burning tech works, nothing to worry about. It's caused from Z-CLV or CLV burning.

The bad burn rings are incomplete, not perfect circle, and may be out of round a little bit. I mostly see that on Ritek media, and the inner portion of the disc is bad.

  6. lordsmurf, i think what illustrates best the
thing i have is that "dvd" scheme u have
on ur site... im talking on the most right picture
on the (on the dvd quality faq...).

so bascily if i scan it using nero and get
a 100% perfect disc its ok? and can i
go on burning on x16 or should i lower
the speed just in case (im burning image
files onto dvds... not regular "nero" burning)?

  8. so basicly its ok to continue burning in x16 speeds?
as long as the disc scans are good?

it should have no effect on the playback in standalones?

Yes! Besides why would you purpusely buy 16x disk and then throtle them back to a lower speed. Might as well go with the lower speed disk then. Unless you get a great deal on them I see no point in getting 16x and then burning at 8x. If the disk is great quality it should be able to be burned successfully at its rated speed and even higher in some cases. I burn all my TY from supermediastore or rima at 8x to 12x on either my tower or idividual Nec drives on my PC. Get 100% burns and 100% scans.

I'd definitely update that firmware to DL13. There were several significant enhancements in DL13. I know my quality scan scores increased noticeably on MCC 03RG20 and MCC..004 after going from DL11 to DL13. I skipped DL12. Good luck.

These rings are normal for high speed burns. Anyone who burns media at less than it's rated speed either doesn't have a drive which supports those speeds or should really consider buying one that does so reliably.

Have you tried defragging the HD? A friends burner was doing the same thing, after a defrag, it worked fine.

Just because you have a 16 speed burner doesn't mean you should burn at 16 speed. I have 2 Plextor PX-716A burners in my machine. I use Verbatim 16 speed DVD-R inkjet printables. I burn at 6X if using one burner, and 4X if making multiple copies using both burners simultaneously. I get excellent burns according to Plextools software. If I burn fadter with 2 burners I get an error about every 20th. disc. Just more than the old computer can handle I guess. Why do I by 16 speed media? It's a good buy at Sams.
