After ripping and burning to ISO w/Decrypter, I got this message while burning:

    I/O Error!

    Device: (1:0:0) MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S 1.50 (D(ATA)

    ScseStatis:0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition

    CDB: 2A 00 00 1E C2 A0 00 00 20 00
    Interpretation: Write (10)-Sectors: 2015904-2015935

    Sense Area: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 83 00 00 30 05 00 00 00 00
    Interpretation: Cannot Write Medium-Incompatible Format

Since the error message popped up at the 42% complete mark, I was wondering if the drive is having trouble actually burning DL even though its rated to do so. I know for a fact it should, as I already pm'd another user with the same drive who's been able to burn DL with Nero. I was using Intervideo WinDvd (which came pre-loaded on my Toshiba laptop) for previous single layer burns with no problems using Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim discs. However, when using WinDvd with a Verbatim DL in the drive, windvd recognizes it as DL but refuses to burn to it, saying 'there is not enough space on the disc'. I've tried to find firmware updates for the drive, but no luck.

That's when I decided to give decrypter a try, but got errors when burning in both File and ISO mode. I was thinking of trying IMGburn next, so if anyone has any advice or tips on proper settings for DL burns, I'd greatly appreciate avoiding any more coasters.

Use IMGBURN to burn your dual layer media.

DVDDecrypter wsn't designed with dl media in mind ... however you can still use it to rip your dl dvds but you should burn it with IMGBURN as this will sort out the layer break that dvddecrypter can't handle

dvddecrypter - iso read (on the mode tab)
imgburn - write (on the mode tab)

    spyder67,

Here's a link to the guide for using ImgBurn to burn VIDEO_TS - AUDIO_TS folders to a dual layer disk. Doing it that way, and not using an ISO, will give you the best probability of success.

If there's a problem with the burn, post the burn log, and we should be able to diagnose the error.

For that general class of error, things to check would be:
    1) Other programs running during the burn are interferring
    2) ASPI layer configuration error (not a problem if you're using SPTI available in XP)
    3) Medium problem (not likely if you're using Verbatim DL)
    4) Drive malfunction

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll see if I can try it out this weekend and post the results.

ImgBurn rocks! Special thanks to VegasBud for the 'quick and easy guide' link for burning as video and audio TS folders rather than ISO. Since I already had the TS folders from ripping with dvdshrink, I decided to use that instead of ripping again with dvdfab or decrypter. After reading about the potentially faulty way dvdshrink groups the BUP files though, I'll probably use something else for ripping in the future.

Don't worry about that as ImgBurn adjusts for 32k gaps.

Even better is VobBlanker. Use its Adjust Sectors (In Input Folder) function to space IFOs and BUPs opposite each other on the DVD (make this your last step in authoring/editing).

    Then burn with ImgBurn.

    Les
