I have a winavi which is registered. I'm trying to encode a 220 mb mpeg2 video clip to something smaller - xvid, divx, wmv. I've already made a dvd of the clips and now just want some small lower quality clips to keep on the pc.
When i try to encode to say divx or xvid eveything works fine apart from i can't change any audio settings and every clip comes out with audio like this

Audio: MPEG Audio Layer 3 22050Hz stereo 56Kbps [Stream 01]

the audio on the original was this format

    Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 224Kbps [Mpeg-1]

Where i select the video codec there is a small button to the right, clicking this i get a load of options specific to that video codec. There is a corresponding button next to where you select the audio codec but when i click this nothing happens. Also the audio bitrate options in the lower part of the screen are all greyed out. This happens no matter what combo of video and audio codecs i select.
I have tried the same source file in super and xilisoft video convertor and i get options to change the audio bitrate.
Can anybody think of any reason why i can't change the audio settings ?
I'm quite happy using super although i get errors if the directshow check box is selected. I want to find a program for a friend to use and was going to reccomend winavi as it has a simpler approach/interface which would suit them better.

Thanks for any help - been to winavi site but couldn't find any help

Uh... since it IS registered, why don't you ask people who made it? They would know more than us for sure.

Honestly, the reputation of WinAVI ain't too good around here. It's known as the n00b cannon. And deservedly, I'd say.

Hmmm...that doesn't look right. Mine says that I can select (in DivX at least):

    128000
    160000
    192000
    224000

and a sample rate of 44100 or 48000. Mine is v7.1. What is yours?

Actually, the highest bit rate of the MPEG Audio Layer3 is 56Kbps. And any program cannot change it. If you want to get 224Kbps audio bit rate for the output file, you may install a ogg codec and then select this codec as the audio codec.

Possibly using WinAVI. For all other mp3 encoders, there's no such limit, and it's plain stupid for any decent AVI encoder to limit mp3 bitrate to 56 kbps, thus making mp3 audio unusable. Another reason to avoid this app. (Besides their tendency to use fora like this to market their product without paying the owner, and other more technical shortcomings of WinAVI)

Isn't that like the bitrate limit of the MP3 Codec that comes standard with WinXP (Fraunhofer ?) ?

Pity about the automatic location by IP identifying the WinAVI spammer(s) that frequent these fora
    If in doubt, Google it.

There is no limit for WinAvi 7.1 either. Doesn't anyone read the entire message thread?

Where do you see WinAVI 7.1 mentioned? How come the WinAVI representative, gracing us with his precense and spam, didn't inform us?
