i installed k-lite codec pack a few months ago, and everything was fine, until i had problems streaming this one video which was pink. I then looked for a newer version of k-lite codec pack, and saw that there is a new version. i uninstalled my previous version, and installed the new version (2.70) and the streaming video was still pink. To make things worse, i tried playing some quicktime HD 720p video trailers, and one was pink, and the other one looked REALLY bright.

so now i uninstalled k-lite codec pack, and now ALL my videos are pink... ive tried various things like VLC player, ffdshow but all my videos are still pink.

is there anything i can do?

also, im using quicktime alternative 1.68 btw.

You can run Codec Sniper and try to remove corrupted codecs. We try to warn people about codec packs. But since you haven't filled out your computer profile, I have no idea what OS you are using and would not be able to give much more advice. OS2? Linux? OSX?.

im using windows xp professional sp2.

according to codec sniper, all my codecs are ok.

im guessing k-lite uninstalled codecs that were already on my computer when i installed it... i tried RE-installing it, and my videos are still pink, although some are normal when i play them with media player classic, but theyre all pink with windows media palyer.

is there anyway i can get back all of the default windows codecs?

Thanks for the computer details. It helps. Try doing a restore to a time before you installed your codec pack. If Codec Sniper doesn't see any problems, it may be something corrupted in the registry. Unfortunately, uninstall may not remove all the problems with a codec pack. You can try to remove the codecs that are causing problems, but it can be an involved process.

The basic problem with codec packs is that they may install needed codecs, but they also install corrupted codecs, old codecs and codecs that interfere with your good codecs. It can be difficult to clean up the mess. If a restore doesn't work and you get no other workable solutions, a reinstall of the OS, along with a repartition, reformat is sometimes the final cure.

EDIT: Just saw your updated post. ffdshow is safe. At least I have never had problems with it. It is mainly for Xvid, Divx type AVIs.

The best way to install codecs is to check the unknown video with a program like Gspot. Then install only the needed codec.

when installing ffdshow, which codecs should i select? i noticed some of them arent selected (like XVID, Divx 5 and a few others). should i just select all of them? same question for the audio codecs, should i check all of them?

  8. if you know you have other codecs installed that can play back the unselected stuff...i.e. if you have xvid and divx installed, just leave em unchecked, it's generally better to have the codec intended to play back the files than a 3rd party codec, such as ffdshow........ffdshow is primarily meant to decode stuff that doesnt have very readily available alternitive codecs to play back the video...and if you see something that you have no idea what it is, generally it's best to leave it checked, but yes, i'd advise against EVER installing a codec pack, they can do stuff such as the issue you had, they can turn your videos literally upsidedown, they can cause videos to take slightly (not really significantly any more, this used to be more of an issue back in the mhz pc days)longer to load in a media player, because your media player has to "dig" through the extra junk to find the proper codec.....all in all they are a headache to deal with and are just as well avoided.........i learned my lesson back in the days of the angel potion codec pack....but yea, as what was said, just use g-spot to see what you need, if a video by chance doesnt load up properly....

That's unusual. I just select the defaults all the way through. That includes Divx and Xvid. The program changes with upgrades. Maybe you have those codecs already and it figures you don't need them. Try it at default and as long as the codecs it supplies works, you should be OK.

EDIT: It looks like whitejremiah may have answered it.

    one last question.

would it be a good idea to install divx and xvid, THEN install ffdshow? because you guys said its better to let the actual codec be used instead of a 3rd party tool like ffdshow.
