Personal opinion : codec packs are just like asking for trouble. They install a lot of stuff you do not need, without giving you any control over what they do. You get mixed versions, conflicting settings, and very limited uninstall options. They take a very scatter gun approach to what is usually a very simple and straight-forward problem. Finally, they often do not uninstall nicely, leaving you with a hell of a mess. When something does go wrong (and it often does with codec packs), trouble shooting is almost impossible. Worst case, video and audio playback can be irrevocable corrupted, and only a fresh install of windows will fix it.

Use g-spot or media info or video inspector to determine what codecs you need, and install only those codecs.

If you need help identifying the codec you need, post a g-spot screenshot and someone will help you get it going.
