I know this seems to be a common problem but even though I've looked on the forum, I can't find a solution so would appreciate any help.
I've hooked up a VCR to my PC using a lead with a scart at one end and video/sound composite at the other. The picture is fine but there's no sound. When I go to the audio options for recording, all the slide bars are greyed out except the recording one, which is turned up. None of the mute boxes are ticked and yet for some reason I still can't hear anything. I know the lead works as it's also used to connect my Media Centre PC to a set-top box, which has no problems with sound.
Any ideas please?

You need to find the preference/option in your capture software which tells it which device to select for inputting the audio.

"no problems with sound" does not provide enough information. Are you saying that using the same cable, connected to the PC in the same way, capturing with the same software, but with the audio connected to the settop box instead of the VCR, you are in fact able to capture sound?
If that is the case, then the problem lies with the VCR connection and has nothing to do with the PC. If this is not the case, then explain more clearly and in more detail exactly what the situation is. -

The settings for the software all look correct, it's just that I'm not hearing any audio. In my mind, it has something to do with the fact that the audio properties are greyed out. Is there any way to make them work? -

OK. Then somewhere in your preferences or options in your capture software, you should be able to find that device and select it as the input for your sound. Software doesn't automatically detect where to get stuff from. You have to point it to the proper devices.

They appear to use ATI and Nvidia cores for their cards, though I did not find anything exactly like what you are describing.
All ATI and Nvidia capture cards I have seen require the audio connection to the capture card, then either an internal or external connection to the sound card. The capture card does not actually capture audio, just provides an interface.
This would most likely be explained in the manual, also examine the included cables. Other option would be to plug the audio directly into the line-in.
Is there any capture software included with the card? Having used Ulead products for capture, I would recommend something else. Preferably that which came with the card.
Is there a coax cable connected to the card? Most particularly when you are hearing audio?
Does the VCR correctly supply audio when using Media Center? -

Thanks for all the help with this. I really appreciate it. -
Why "Obviously mono"? Use a Y adapter, RCA to stereo mini jack. You should get stereo sound.
Next thing is to use something besides Ulead to capture. Many choices, check the tools section. Ulead good for editing or effects, not so good for capture or encoding.
