i tried the TMPGEnc DVD Author trial session and i liked the simplicity and it got the job done

im looking for a program that does chapters, multiple titles, subtitles, and custom background build.

is TMPGEnc worth it's money if i buy it?? or would you recommend something else??

It does everything you ask except subtitles but whenever I have something with subtitles I just "burn" them into the video while doing the encoding.

The new PRO version allows for 2 audio streams instead of one but still no selectable subtitle option.

I use TMPGEnc DVD Author and tried the trail for PRO version which I liked but don't have the money to upgrade (money is tight for me at the moment) but for the money you can't beat the ease of use either way. So easy to use yet they work SO well and I've never experienced another DVD authoring program (and I've tried alot) that allows such easy placement of custom chapter stops.

If you want more flexibility like selectable subtitles and multiple audio files (more than 2) with DTS as an option etc. then you have to use DVD Lab Pro but I find making menu's to be a pain-in-the-ass. I spend enough time doing the capture and encoding I don't need to spend hours on menu design.

so the pro version lets you do 2 audio files meaning "dubs" right??
if so, i dont think i would ever want to use dubs in any of my files so i guess i wont ever need the pro version...

im leaning towards TMPGEnc DVD Author but let me just wait a bit to see if anyone else has anything to say... only if tmpgenc had subtitle option, i would buy it hands down

Well if you are backing up a DVD with multiple audio files they can be anything.

For instance one might be 5.1 Dolby Digital Suround and the other might be 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio Commentary.

Maybe the DVD has 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround and regular 2.0 Stereo and you want to include both.

I've seen movies where they also include a remixed 5.1 Dolby Digital but also include the original Mono only audio track if that was the way the movie was made. Some people like to keep the Mono track in such instances since that is considered more "pure".

    Stuff like that.

  5. dvdlab pro is probably a better tool if you want subtitles, and you can actually set up some basic menus and chaptering and that type of thing FAIRLY quickly...but yes, it can take some time to learn how to do it fast, and once you start adding in other things such as motion menus, that type of deal, it can get fairly complicated........i'd suggest giving it a run and see what you think, they have a free trial on it, and if you do like it, i'd consider buying it, as it is probably one of the best programs out there for video releated stuff.....particularly for dvd authoring........i know myself, i can slap together a DECENT looking dvd in about fifteen min, but it takes some time to compile the project together and turn it into vob/ifo format like you need to burn it to a disc.... also, if tyou like the program, and dont have the money to throw down to buy it, you can probably locate one of the later betas through google these days.....it would be missing a few of the features, but it would be free...

Ulead DVD Workshop 2 is a perfect upgrade to folks seeking advanced options (everything you've requested plus more), but without sacrificing a relatively easy interface.

I second Lordsmurf's reccomendation for WS2. It's a very nice program. Download the trial version and see for yourself. (NOTE: The trial version doesn't work with AC3 audio.)

I'd spend the $$ on TMPGEnc DVD Author or TSUNAMI MPEG DVD Author PRO
Before Ulead DVD Workshop 2, and would easily spend the $200.00 for DVD-lab PRO before WS2 Heck, i'd spend $400.00 on DLP before WS2 8) And i own and have used them all.

TDA is definately excellent for starting on and DLP is a bit more advanced, but easy with a little practice.

And i have yet to find anything i can't do in DLP.
And Real-DRAW PRO is a great companion for making custom buttons, frames, ect.

And the nice thing about being able to have multiple audio tracks, i have the original D.C. of Lawnmower Man on LD, this version was never released on dvd and the LD has a secondary audio track with the directors commentary with some of the actors & for transfering it to dvd i was able to use both audio tracks

I purchased the TMPgen Pro after using the trial version. One thing you may look for is a package offering a competitive upgrade rebate. Mine had a sticker on it offering $30 off.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe failure is just your style.....
