I've been pricing video cards for a new system I'll be building, and I'd like to buy myself a 6800gt to replace my old gainward geforce3 (w/vivo). The problem, though, is that the only 6800gt that seems to have video-in is the gainward cx-6800gt, but they are expensive, hard-to-find, and limited to AGP 8x (I'd really much rather go ahead with PCI-Express for my MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum mobo). Should I try to hold out for the (outlandishly pricey) 7800 series, or am I overlooking other 6800gt's with capture? Also, should I maybe consider a stand-alone capture device or capture card? I'd really like to manually control the gain/agc, brightness, etc, if possible (btw, I know that there are 6600gt's with vivo function, but the general consensus is that the 6800's are well worth the extra cash, especially since the prices will be coming down some in the next few months).

Interesting. I looked for a few VIVO (Video in Video Out) PCI-E cards and they don't seem that common. If you really want the 6800 chipset, do a Google search for 6800 PCI-E.

Check for some outside capture devices maybe. I have a ADVC-100 that I should be able to use for several computers into the future. It will last longer than a lot of capture cards.

PCI-E is still fairly new. You might want to check on some of the major players in the capture card business and see what they have in mind for the future.

    Hi,
I have a vivo card(FX5600deluxe) and it has been not worth the difference I paid for it..Heres my rub..When i try to capture home movies, the capture software thinks it is a commercial tape and injects Macrovision protection on the captured file..OK if I was trying to pirate a movie or something but it does not know the difference between a home movie and a commercial tape..I read where ATI has a similar problem..
I have wasted the extra i paid for this feature..IMHO Get a standalone card or hardware capture device..
Do a thorough search online before you decide..
    Goodluck,

Hey, Jolphil, a full-frame tbc such as the datavideo tbc-1000 will solve your macrovision problem. There has been quite a bit of discussion on the subject of macrovision and tbc's, so try to search the forum archives. The tbc will also stabilize your feed into the capture card (you'll almost forget what a frame drop is, and that flagging at the top of your captured video will be gone). Trust me, my wife is afraid she'll come home to find it in her spot. I have no current comment on the likeliness of that...

  5. I would wait a month to see what the new ATI cards have to offer.
