what is your source video? does it freeze with all video sources?
have you recently installed any new codecs? or codec packs?

i would try divxtodvd, it seems to work best with most sources.

Are you sure you don't have a hardware problem like an overheating CPU? That would cause what you describe. Or failing RAM memory?

  6. Did it stop working BEFORE you reinstalled or AFTER?

What EXACTLY has changed between the last time it DID work and the first time it did NOT work? Something has changed, most likely something you did. Complete detail will help solve the problem, leaving things out may prevent solving the problem.

What is the source of the file and have you tried any other files which are KNOWN to be defect-free? In what way did you determine that the suspect file or test files are KNOWN to be defect-free? Hint: test with a DVD rip, from a disk you have done before, or one without any extreme copy-protection.

Everything was working well, but to try and speed things up I removed a load of programs.
Awhile later I went to encode a couple of Movies and they wouldnt. All encoders stop .Almost sure it was because I removed something, so I reloaded xp but its the same. All movies play and there are no other problems ps hanks for tryin to help

When you reinstalled XP, did you repartition and reformat or just do a repair? If so, you still have much of the same stuff on the hard drive. XP will just repair the installation and not much else.

At this point that is more likely than overheating. But an easy test of overheating is to take the side covers off the computer, blow out the dust and run it for a while like that to see if that helps.

If RAM is the problem, you can pull one stick and try it, then the other, or better, substitute with other memory. After that, it could be power supply problems, etc.

  9. OK, so it worked, then you removed "a bunch of programs", then it did not work.

Unless the PC is fairly new or is locking up otherwise, your problem is NOT overheating, nor anything hardware related.

Re-installing XP does absolutely nothing to repair the damage done when the "bunch of programs" were removed. BTW, this does nothing to improve speed unless these programs are always running, in which case remove them from startup, do not uninstall. There could be some sort of file conflict but since you were running OK before that is not the case.

This is that part of the troubleshooting flowchart that says "Did you mess with it?"

You have removed or changed something which is related to your video encoding. The file or registry setting changed or removed by these actions will not be replaced by re-installing XP. It will most likely be repaired by re-installing the critical program which was removed. This will probably be something video-related, not a video game or word processor.

Try to determine what process EXACTLY is occurring at "one-third of the way" thru the conversion. AC3 creation? IVTC? An error log perhaps? At least one of these should be making a log file. What you want is NOT the last process that DID work, you need the first process that did NOT work. You may need to compare with a correct log to see what the next entry should be, often that will be where the log stops.

A stab in the dark, but I'd say that in your quest to speed things up you removed / corrupted your codec(s) and now these programs cannot process the files properly.

First step to recovery is to dump "crapware" such as DVDSanta, WinAVI and NeroVision Express. About the only decent one-click wonder for this type of conversion is DivxToDVD, but it still doesn't get near the manual process of using an encoder such as TMPGEnc or CCE and an authoring program.
    If in doubt, Google it.
