1. Buy a DVD recorder ( $79.00 and up ) with firewire input.
2. Plug your miniDV cam into the recorder with a firewire cable.
3. press record.
Note : Transfer thru PC was the step before DVD recorder. -
You need something like tmpgenc (trial version does dvd level mpeg 2 free for 30 days) to convert the avi to mpeg2. There are one or two free mpeg2 encoders. Check the TOOLS section for encoders.
From their you take your new mpeg file and author it with a program like ulead dvd moviefactory or tmpgenc dvd author. With those programs you can create menus and the like. The program will take your mpeg 2 file and create the necessary files for a dvd and create them - then you can burn the dvd.
Check out the CONVERT section for guides on dv to dvd or avi to dvd.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

3. Use winDV to transfer the 25Gb worth of avi file, spend hours on PC with TMPGenc, TMPGenc DVD author, DVDshrink, and nero, and ...., and don't get to press [record].

Hi Pav69,
Welcome to the forums.
I'm one of those who believe it's best to use different tools for different jobs - and the right tools at that. So, it's fair to say I'm not from the "all-in-school". That said, if you want to use an all-in-one then, if you're happy with the ouput, then that's fine.
Here's a couple of old posts of mine that will help if you want to use seperate tools:

If you have any questions, post back. Hope that helps. Good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

My method is: WinDV to transfer to the computer. Edit and filter if needed in VirtualDub Mod. Save out the audio as a WAV, then encode that to AC3 audio with ffmpeggui. Frameserve the video only to TMPGEnc encoder to convert to DVD compliant MPEG-2. Then I add the MPEG-2 video to TMPGEnc DVD Author, along with the AC3 audio, add chapters and menus and burn.
DV is easy to edit and VDM is a good editor for it. It has lots of filters available if you need them. Frameserving eliminates creating an edited file and that saves hard drive space and time. AC3 is a more compatible audio format than the MPEG-1 Layer2 that TMPGEnc encoder produces.
If you want a quick and easy method, DivxToDVD can also convert DV to DVD. There is a freeware version available. The quality and control is not as good as the above method, though. And there are other many other methods.
