  1. Hi all,
just hoping someone could shed some light on my problem?
Whenever I try to play a video of any type, DVD, mpg, mov, avi I only see a part of the screen.
When I try to play a DVD I only get the top-right quarter of the screen!
It happens in Winamp/Win Media Player/Media Player Classic and all of the DVD playback programs I have tried(WinDVD & PowerDVD)
I have a feeling it could it be my graphics card, (It's old) Abit Siluro FX5600 DT 256MB

I tried changing some settings in ffdshow but to no avail(saw the video upside-down thread)
I also saw the threads saying to remove all codecs from the system- I had this problem with a clean install- then I installed the K-Lite Mega Code pack- still no fix, so i removed it again

    anyone with any ideas?

    I haven't got a clue what's up with it

A Codec Pack is more likely to cause more problems than it fixes IMHO.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Yeah- I've seen that on several threads and I've removed them with no change!
    Thanks for the input

I'd say that either the damage (most likely registry-based) has already been done, or the problem in this case is not the codecs, and something video card-related. Since this was a fresh install of Windows, did you install the latest DirectX ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Yep- installed F.E.A.R. so got DirectX 9.0a

    edit:
Just checked and saw that DirectX is now 9.0c
Will download but can't see it making much difference

    This is my Graphics card
    http://www.abit-usa.com/products/graphics/products.php?categories=2&model=45
    and it says
Advanced Display Pipeline with Full NView Capabilities
    - Dual 400MHz RAMDACs for display resolutions up to and including 2048 x 1536 @ 85Hz
    - Video Mixing Redender (VMR) supports multiple video windows with full quality and features in each window
    - High-quality HDTV/DVD playback
    - Integrated full hardware MPEG II decoder delivers full-frame rate, full screen MPEG-2 video on your desktop
so it looks like my Graphics Card shouldn't be causing any problems

  6. Theoretically, sure, the card should be capable. In the real world, it or the drivers is quite likely to be the problem.

Did it ever work correctly? If so, what changed?

Have you tried an actual, commercial DVD disk as opposed to a file? How about a test or sample file, meaning one that is guaranteed not to be corrupted?

If the PC were in my shop the first thing I would do would be to swap out the video card with any modern card and test.

Do you see more of the video, meaning it covers a larger portion of the screen, when playing a lower-resolution file? Is this effect, if present, proportional - the lower the res, the bigger the image?

Sounds like part of the card's memory, or the interface to it, may be damaged.

Try disabling or enabling video overlay.

I don't have another card to test it with at the moment- but I'll see what I can do
Also, I've tried Stargate , Gone in 60seconds , Land of the Dead DVD's and ALL of them give the same result.
I can play F.E.A.R. without any problems and Need for Speed:Most Wanted, so I can't see what could be wrong with the memory of the Graphics Card?

Anything else you can think of?

    Thanks for th input
