I've been using Ritek G05 printable media for a while and recently I've read about their quality is going downhill and such so I've been scanning my old backups for errors. Mostly I havent found anything but I am concerned.

My first question is about Nero CD-DVD Speed. How can I do a disc quality scan? The start button is greyed out. I am able to do a Scan Disc although I find it doesnt pick up the errors as easily as DVDInfoPro.

Secondly, if I were to use DVD Decrypter to copy files on to my computer from a backup that showed errors during a scan, and it successfully copied (I assume it would fail if it wouldnt be able to read certain data) then can I assume that those files are good to use to re-burn? Or is it possible the errors will still exist in that data?

Also, is it true that burning at say 4X on 8X media won't be a problem? I read some people said you should burn at the speed that the media is meant for, while others said thats just a myth and that slower is usually better and safer.

Thanks in advance for your help.

In most instances, once a disc begins to show errors, then the data is lost and cannot be recovered.

As for burning speed, it is just a matter of preference. From my experience, there is no need to burn at a slower speed unless you are having buffer underrun errors and your burner doesn't perform burn-safe very well, or if you are using questionable media and trying to get a good burn. Otherwise, feel free to burn at the highest speed.

I burn all of my TY 8x media at 12x without any issues using a NEC3500a.
