Last month I had a hp 300c in the shop with the same issues. For some reason that drive failed to burn any DVDs. It's odd that it would read DVDs and still burn/read CDs but just wouldn't burn DVDs. Error for me was disc related. i can't remember the exact message. I never was able to figure out what the problem was so the customer bought a new drive (samsung) instead of having me continue diagnosing. i still have the drive and I'd be curious to know if anyone does find a solution to this issue.

well that error seems to point to medium problems, so what kind of disks are you using?

also is your firmware and your drivers up-to-date?

have you successfully burned dvds in the past?

man i'm not sure, you keep getting that same error? the error suggests you might want to try different disks. you may possibly have a hardware problem.
i myself have a sony burner that is EXTREMELY picky about which disks i use...
    ideas, anyone?!

OK, so far we've asked for specific error messages and are only getting general messages in response. Maybe we should ask:

What exactly is it that you are trying to burn to DVD? From your last post it appears you are trying to burn 458MB's of something onto a 4.7GB DVD, which really doesn't make sense as there's not alot of video info that can fit in such a small file.

Why are you trying to burn such a small amount of data onta a DVD vs a CD, which can hold 700 MB's?

Please elaborate for the rest of us....

    Cheers!

well he did post this bit of info:
    Sense: 03 ASC: 0C ASCQ: 00 (Command 00)
...which basically means "write error" (not very helpful!)

and as for graphics card, depends on your intentions (for gaming or just to 'lighten the load'?)

OK........Lets say that i try to burn a dvd disk that has songs on it for a dvd data back up.I have alot of songs that i extracted from cds over the past couple years and the size of all my songs is about 1.71 gb and i burn on a 4.7 gb dvd disk.I use nero 6 and/or recordnow.I take and put all my songs in the field of nero or record now(copy or drag & drop).I take and hit burn ,about 5 seconds after i hit burn ,it tells me an error about i need to erase the dvd.But the thing is ,before i burn any project ,i always make sure that i erase the dvd before i burn.I had the dvd burn for about a year now. Here is another error it gives me ........

So the problem you are having is with Re-Writable media?!?! Why didn't you state that at the outset?!?

OK, it's a known thing that RW discs have a certain shelf-life (read that as 'burn-life') before they become completely useless anymore.

Definitely try a different disc, and be sure to keep these ReWritables away from direct sunlight.

One more thing - be sure you are trying to burn a data DVD, as in DVD-ROM here. If you try to burn a DVD Audio disc, you may need to change the file format to be DVD-A compliant. A straight DVD-ROM burn is basically a disc back-up, as you've stated.

Post back and let us know.

I'm glad we were able to move this thread forward a little!

    Cheers!

seems to me it could just be the burner you have is failing to write. can you put the drive in another pc to test it out? you could also have some sort of software conflict as well. what other burning software are you using? memorex dvd media isn't the best to use. try another brand of dvd media. you could also try using decrypter to burn a ISO IMAGE instead of using NERO. from what i've read NERO 7 is quite buggy.

Great log - excellent info capture!

    OK, a few questions -

1 - It looks like you have multiple burners installed in your system (welcome to the club!), but what I'd like to know is are they all external?

2 - What are the configurations of all of your CD/DVD burners in your machine?

3 - How are they all connected? USB, FireWire, IDE cable (internally)?

4 - If you've got multiple external burners, can you remove them all and just use the DVD burner that's giving you problems?

As a last resort, you can use Windows XP's Hardware Profiles feature to create a new profile, reboot using that newly created profile and remove the other CD/DVD burners and just use the one that's giving you trouble, if you'd like to isolate it for troubleshooting. But I think it's more likely that you will find the answer buried somewhere within the configuration of all of these drives.

Please read carefully and answer the above questions to the best of your ability - let's see if we can't zero in on this one, ok?

    Cheers!

your log says nero v7. were you recently trying out a new version?
if so, completely un-install nero and reinstall v6.

Hey ToolFool ,im used to nero 6, just started using 7 like a day ago ,works pretty good for me. Sorry bout that.

    Hey TaoTeWingChun.....
Ok , here is the best anwsers i can give ya.

    1 - They are all not external. I have 3 drives in all. I have 1 cd burner(internal), I have a dvd-rom(not burner-internal), and the dvd burner(external).

2 - What do you mean by this. Not really good about these kinds of things. How whould i go by this.

    3 - My dvd burner is connected with a 1.0 , 1.1 , 2.0 USB cable. My cd burner and dvd-rom is internal.Its using 2.0 speed.

    4 - Only 1 usb drive.(Dvd Burner)

And for last resort , what do you mean by this 1 too.

I would try swapping the burner and rom to see if this improves things.

pull the DVD-ROM out of your case, and the burner out of the external case, and put the burner in the computer (connected directly to the motherboard) and the DVD-ROM in the external case.
