I have searched the forums for several days and have not found anything that helps me with my problem.
I have tried several times to burn some video files I have on my HDD to VCD. Everytime I attempt at some point in the transcoding process my computer locks up and I have to unplug it and let it boot up again. (the mouse and keyboard will not funtion) Of course I have to start all over again . It did not even get to where it was actually burning the disk.
I am using windows XP sp2, AMD processor, I have 256 Megs of RAM,Processor is 1.7 ghzt,
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have tried ten times at least and did not get through the transcoding process. The last time I tried I got through the transcoding process but it immediately said Burn process failed. I don't remember the exact wording. I reduced the burn speed from Max to 2x. I went into device manager to check my CD writer's drivers but it says it is working properly. I tried to turn off everything that was running on my computer to conserve resources ( disconnected dsl, closed virus scanner and firewall, closed all running Apps ) did not help evidently.
I have looked at other posts to the forum but i do not see anything that is the same problem as this is. I have been trying to get nero to burn things for a year now. Never succeeded at anything more than a really short photo slide show burned to DVD. I am including the log file I got the one time the computer tried to actually burn the disc.

What are your source files? avi? You might trying running them through gspot to get some more information on them. You could also try another transcoder like tmpgenc to create VCD-compliant files and then burn them using Nero.

The files I was trying to burn were Mpg and Wmv. I did not have any AVI files in the bunch. Can you tell me why I cannot get that log file posted? Thank you for answering me!

Are you talking transcoding and burning or just burning? If it's just burning you can use VCDEasy to create a bin/cue that Nero will recognize or else you should be able to burn the vcd compliant file with VCDEasy...

If it's transcoding and burning, that's another story...

Actually I was talking about transcoding AND Burning. It took ten (maybe more) trys to get through the transcoding process. The last time I tried it got through the transcoding process and when it finished It said burn process failed. I saved the log file but cannot figure out how to post it here.

I think you're asking a lot from nero to convert the files you have to VCD compliance. The mpg files you have are already coded to specific resolution, bit-rate, aspect, etc. If they were coded improperly, or at other-than-VCD specs, or are corrupted in some way, then it's tough for a single prog to fix all that. IMHO, your best bet is to search the guides on this site (mpg->VCD , WMV->VCD), and try what you find there. Wish I had a silver bullet to give you, but then, if I did, I don't imagine that I'd hang out here much. Luck.

  8. I suggest dont use Nero for transcoding. Use it only for burning.

Use TMPGEnc to encode your file to VCD specs MPEG. Select the correct VCD template in TMPGEnc and encode. After you have the MPEG file brun it with Nero. It is possible that Nero will tell you that the MPEG file is not VCD compliant. Just ignore the warning and burn your disk.

    Good Luck.

Wow! Thanks for all the info. You have been an invaluable help. Do not know if anything will work but you have given me plenty with which to work. I already got gspot and tempenge . I will get on it as soon as work is over today. Thanks for a great forum. Love to printer friendly version thing. This is by far the best experience I have had with any help forum. Thanks again. If any more suggestions out there, I am all ears! :P

You seem like a good student, so here's another lesson:
Don't even use Nero to author - I (like so many newbies) started that way, and it almost had me giving the whole thing up. Nero simply (the version I used, at least) creates non compliant VCD, which my player refused to play.
Use VCDEasy (last free version will do fine!) to author, and burn too, if your setup is supported by VCDEasy.
If not, let VCDEasy create the cue/bin for the VCD, and burn the cue/bin with anything that knows how to (even Nero can!).

Thanks! Actually I did try using VCDEasy at one point. I had a problem in that it said several of the video files were not compliant for VCDEasy. It said they were mpeg 2 and VCDEasy only does mpeg 1 video. That is why I tried to author the vcd using nero. I have Winavi video converter, do you suppose I could go through the files and convert the mpeg 2 files to mpeg 1 and then try to author with VCDEasy? I am not sure how to determine which files are mpeg 1 or mpeg 2. They just have ext .mpeg .
I guess I need to go to VCDEasy page and see how to create Bin/Cue.That will be a start for me. Thank You again!

TMPGEnc is the best choice for encoding to VCD mpg.
VCDEasy correctly rejected the mpeg2 files, as only mpg1 is a valid VCD source.
To create a cue/bin instead of burning, it's just a matter of unchecking a "Burn" checkbox (been a while since I made a VCD)
Use latest GSpot Beta 2.5? something to find file properties.

Because you had spaces in the filenames

Type filename.zip in your post where the file-link should be. Max file size is 2 MB.
Note! Replace filename.zip with the file name of the file and don't have any spaces in the filename. Don't use the Preview if you are uploading files.
    If in doubt, Google it.
