dvd burner or cd burner

Hi,
Can anybody guide me what should I buy -DVD burner or CD burner( wiht respect to cost and its uitility)? Somebody told me that buying dvd is not recommended right now as it has not been standardized in its functions and its very costly.

Is dvd burner as good as cd burner - I mean can I burn CDs and VCDs with dvd burner?

in terms of a dvd burner having cd burning functionality is yes---some of them do, DVR-A03 by Pioneer and Sony's DRU110AC1 both have them, but one is a dvd-r,rw burner and the other is dvd+r,+rw burner..
