Been quite a while since i've built my latest, greatest Pc and paid attention to this sort of thing. I'm suprised a sucessor to the Pentium 4,such as the Pentium 5 has not been released yet.

I just think its odd, like technolgy was "flying" one moment then kinda took a rest for the time being.

I'd imagine by the time a Pentium 5 makes the market it'll be zooming at levels around 6.0-7.0Ghz...

  2. I think they plan to use a different naming convention by that time. I seem to recall having read that somewhere....

I remember reading an article about this. They are fastly approaching a wall which at the present time cannot be breached using conventional technology. They can design the chips to make them faster but have no way of making them......

Well there are alot of tech advances that make the machines better at what they do on the CPU level. Just the mhz doens't have to go up. I mean a 3ghz P1 would actually kinda suck compared to a P4.

When on P5? Who knows maybe next year maybe never. I think there is still more room to give before we hit that "wall". I think heat is actually the greater problems right now.

I think that's one of the bricks.... :P To overcome the heat issue they need to make a smaller chip running at slower speeds. From what I read that is the major hurdle to the next generation of chips. They can't make them that small, at least not at the moment.

Now, Intel and AMD are churning out dual core. the Mhz factor is already in the deminishing return stage. 4+Ghz is probably the max and from there on.. add more cores is the way to go.
