  1. I have imported and edited the VOB files successfully in MVW, but now I'm a bit confused as to what format I should export the timeline/workarea as. What format does everyone else use after they are done editing in MVW?

I usually author DVDs in either Adobe Encore 1.5 or Nero 6.

Thank you for your help and input in advance.

  2. Well, assuming that you intend to re-author the resulting files to DVD, all you need to do is export to either:

    "Save as type" = Automatic.mpg -- if you're using the big red "record" button on the bottom right side of the timeline window;

or, if you're using the cassette tape "export" button on the top toolbar, then choose:

    Format: MPEG-2 Program

This again assumes that your files are already DVD compliant, this way Womble won't re-encode anything, it'll just do a direct stream copy of the files to the new file, preserving image quality. To be sure, in the "Monitor" tab, before you actually export the file, click the "Details" button -- ideally you should see two blue "streams," meaning that both the video and audio streams are being saved unmodified, which is what you want.

If you inserted any effects or transitions, you may see red blips or small sections where the video and/or audio has to be re-encoded at those parts, but those should be minimal. If both tracks are significantly red, then it's going to wanna re-encode those sections and doesn't see them as DVD compliant. But hopefully that won't be the case.

And hopefully some of the above made sense and/or is useful to ya. Good luck!

  3. Hi, thank you for your quick reply!

Yes, I need to re-author these files to DVD. I did as you said and chose the "Automatic.mpg" type. That worked fine, but now I'm confused as to how to author this file. When I use Nero, it will not let me drag the file to the VIDEO_TS folder because the VOB file is larger than 2GB. And Encore will not read the VOB files. What do you use to author the files to DVD?

    Thanks again for your help!

TMPGEnc is what I use after exporting MPEG-2 files from MVW.

  5. Forgive me, but I'm a bit confused... I thought TMPGEnc was just an encoding program?? Does that mean I have to export/encode it again?

Let me fully explain what I'm trying to do: I have 2 mini DVD-Rs that my boss shot on his DVD video camera and he wants me to edit some stuff out and put it all together on 1 DVD. I have accomplished the editing with MVW, but having problems with outputting. What I first tried to do was save it as an MPEG, but this compressed the file and the resulting file/DVD turned out crappier than the original movie/DVDs.

So, I followed the advice of ozymango and chose the "Automatic" setting which gave me a VOB file...but I don't know what to do with this VOB file.

I downloaded TMPGEnc, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to encode this VOB file or what.

I'm just really confused at this point. I hope all of that made sense!

The TMPGEnc Company has several programs. Axlish is referring to is TMPGEnc DVD Author. After you've edited/exported/encoded and you have an mpeg file you're ready to put a on DVD, you have to author it (that will create the vobs, ifo's, etc). That's what TDA does.

  7. Ok, I see now! I didn't realize that TMPGEnc had several programs. I used the trial version of TMPGEnc DVD Author and I was finally able to create the DVD!! Thanks for all your help!
