Is it me, or does this movie look like it's going to be little campy? I hate when they do that to movies.

As opposed to the christopher reeves version ?

Actually, now that I've watched the trailer I think they did themselves a great disservice using the Brando voice-over and music from the 70's version. That and the similarity between so many of the shots makes this feel like a director's cut of the old, with new effects, rather than a new movie. They should have waited until they had more footage. I expected Superman Returns to be something new, not a remake.

Is is not really a remake. We will get a quick rehash of how he came to earth and alittle of his abilities in the beginning, but this movie tales place 7-10 years after the Reeves Superman movies. They wanted to keep Brando as Jor-El, and Most of the Music is new but in the same style as the Original Movies....

Please tell me that the villain in this moving isn't some Solar-Powered Porn Star-looking guy. What kind of crap was that.

    Superman III and IV... crap.

I don't really follow it much. The seem to stomp all over everything they don't want to pay attention to Superman wise. Its an ok show I guess but its a little protracted for my taste in Superman related entertainment.

Honestly if they gave this movie a big enough budget and just called it "Superman Returns to **** some shit up" I'd be there.

I'll just hold onto my dream of a good Superman Batman movie for now though.

    More info on the Movie

Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in the epic action-adventure Superman Returns, a soaring new chapter in the saga of one of the world’s most beloved superheroes. While an old enemy plots to render him powerless once and for all, Superman faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane, has moved on with her life. Or has she? Superman’s bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him. In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.

Kevin Spacey is Lex Luthor... So maybe Zod will be in the Second one, Unless maybe Doomsday makes an Appearance?

Superman Returns takes place after the existing Superman movies, so Zod will already be dead.

I watched the teaser, and I know its just a teaser, and I know that they usually release different teasers to evoke different aspects of the movie, but even still this movie just looks like its going to really suck to me.

    Vote for your ruler
When I first came to your planet and demanded your homes, property and very lives, I didn't know you were already doing so, willingly, with your own government. I can win no tribute from a bankrupted nation populated by feeble flag-waving plebians. In 2008 I shall restore your dignity and make you servants worthy of my rule. This new government shall become a tool of my oppression. Instead of hidden agendas and waffling policies, I offer you direct candor and brutal certainty. I only ask for your tribute, your lives, and your vote.

Your Future President and Eternal Ruler

Well after reading some of Singer's comments it at the very least takes place after II so Zod is definitely dead...unless he somehow survived that fall but that would be stupid. It could be that the movie takes place in between II and III, but the way Singer describes it, it really sounds like he is ignoring the existance of III and IV and just making this movie take place a long time after II. Not a bad idea.

I don't doubt Superman as much as I doubt this guy:

I think Singer is a great director and I have confidence in him after what he did with the X-men, but I just have a feeling this movie is going to tank big. I hope I'm wrong though.

    Why???

His success with XMEN should be a sign of strength. I think he should be able to do with superman what they did with Batman and bring it back.

By the way who's directing XMEN 3?????

Like I said, I'm looking at the teaser footage and I've seen that other footage they showed in Singer's diary features and it just doesn't look like he pulled it off. Since I'm looking at .0001% of the movie I know its premature to judge it, so I'm not, but I've just got a feeling. And doing for Superman what was done for Batman is about as high a goal as they could possibly set. That is most definitely easier said than done. Would be great though, no doubt.

Brett Ratner is directing X-men3. Its kinda a weird turn of events. Ratner was working on Superman Returns and was set to direct it, while Singer was of course the first pick to to X-men 3. Singer turned down X-men3 to do Superman Returns, and Ratner later took over to do X-men3 when Matthew Vaughn quit. Basically, Singer and Ratner switched movies.

I am actually pissed they have never done an "X-Men" 3 yet... at the end of 2 when jean grey dies, you can see the image under the water... thought it was a great way to end it and be able to have a 3rd with the dark phoenix

Personally, the best true to source comic book adaptation to date has been Sin City. Stylistically and story wise it leaves all these super hero adaptations looking pretty limp.

For me, the biggest thing lacking from the 70's/80's Superman movies was any sense of actual heroics. Superman was a wet blanket. I grew up on re-runs of the George Reeves TV series, which to me captured Superman much better than the films. The teaser makes the new film look like a continuation of the same 70's/80's feel.

Superman is really a morality tale. And from what I've seen thats the goal. Superman is about doing the right thing.

Very very early on Nicolas Cage was named the first pick to play Superman in Superman Returns. This was years ago when Cage was alot more popular and kinda one of Hollywood's leading action guys. They scrapped that idea a long time ago. Actually, freakin' Brendan Frasier was a possibility to play Superman at one time. That would have been a travesty. Nic Cage will get his chance to play a sorta-superhero next year though in Ghost Rider.

X-men and X2 were both directed by Bryan Singer. He turned down X3 to do this Superman Returns film instead. So yeah same guy so its definitely got that going for it. X3 has been in production for quite a long time now. Its going to be released in late may of next year. They are bringing in tons of new characters so it could either be really cool or really cheesy.

I don't follow comic books but I can tell which movies are true to the originals. Sin City is the most accurate but the comic book also translates perfectly to the screen, and there's no real costumes, its just clothing. Compare this to X-men and things have got to be updated for film. Imagine if Hugh Jackman's costume were yellow....it just wouldn't work. That's actually one of the things that worries me about Superman. You simply can't change the costume apart from tweaking the S logo. No matter what happens you are looking at a guy in modern times wearing a big blue leotard and red tighty whiteys and wading boots. If the story falters even a little its just going to become comical.

The newest Batman pulled it off pretty well. It was a suit of armor made to look like a Batman. It wasn't leotards.

Ever see the 1990 The Flash tv series (coming to DVD in January, if you haven't). That was another similar situation, his red suit was a bio containment suit to regulate his system. It was made of some sort of rubber-like substance.

I've found that, as long as they explain the purpose of the suit, it can be made non-silly.

I'm not sure how the whole tights thing got started, but I believe Errol Flynn was a factor in their acceptance. It was also easier to draw, and stood out well on the page, to distinguish them from normal people. That's what a superhero is really all about anyway. They're not supposed to dress in normal clothes unless they're hiding. They're a symbol.

  28. this film is going to be a total turd,i can almost feel it in my water.
the xmen movies were shite too.
wtf is it with them and bringing a sense of reality to them,**** that,i want comic book style with comic book effects.
i want juggernaut,i want hulk,i want characters like they should be,not there directors or producers copout versions,i want fantasy, not changed costumes, etc.
if they can do a 100 ship space battle, and carry out a full-on army of orcs etc, battling a human-esque opposition, surely they can give us proper comic book characters.
the fantastic 4 was another POS copout, with the thing looking more like the turd, but with mumps.
i predict a fag fest with kevin spacey, and superman.

I tend to prefer the 2nd in the series over the first. The first spend so much time setting up the characters, which for most isn't really that necessary. It just bogs things down. When you are dealing with Superman or Spiderman, even people who don't read comics know the basics. Get it done with in the first 5 - 10 minutes. If you sepnd more time than that spinning your wheels then you have lost me. I liked X2, but didn't think much of the first one. I liked Spiderman 2 a lot more than 1. I didn't think much of Batman Returns (the Tim Burton film) mainly because it spent forever on the everyone other than Batman. After that the Batman films kinda lost me. Haven't seen Batman Begins yet but it is high on the list.

I actually liked the design in Hulk. I didn't think much of the story or the film itself, but ILM really seemed to get the character right.

My kids love Fantastic 4, but they are 6 and 8. The only good thing I can say about it is that it is slightly better than the never released Roger Corman version from the mid-90's. The writing was on the wall for this one when they reshot scenes because The Incredibles did it better.
