  1. i have some XVID.avi's that playback "squished" at 4:3 when it should have been encoded for 16:9 -- is there any way to take the sqeezed 4:3 video and convert it to the proper 16:9 so i can then use TOAST 7.0.1 to make a playable DVDR in 16:9?
i do not have the original source video that the "incorrect aspect ratio" video was made from.

i can't play avi's on my TV DVDplayer, which is why after correcting the aspect ratio, i want to burn to DVDR.

is it possible using a MAC?

Change the frame size (width) in QuickTime (Cmd-J, Video track, Visual Settings, Scaled Size) to the correct aspect ratio, save as reference movie, and feed that to Toast.

  4. ok, i just finished "converting" the AVI to VIDEO_TS, and the video is still 4:3 even though it showed 16:9 in TOAST.

any idea why? i did exactly as you instructed.

Nice guide Jerome (nice app too, we love you )

By the way, you might want to change 'not' to 'now' in your post above to avoid any confusion.

Use ffmpegX (I use v0.0.9s although others swear by 0.0.9t; see the ffmpegx forum for why). Set the proper pixel size there. 16:9 should work out to 720x360 (it's actually 640x360 but we're doing DVD and NTSC DVD is 720 pixels wide).

Or, if you have the MPEG2 codec from Apple, export from QT Pro Player but remember to clck the 16:9 checkbox! No amount of pixel twiddling will help unless you have this set properly.

Or, use MPEG Streamclip and export to mpeg2 using the desired ratio (720x360). This app is free and usually works very well for me.
