  1. I am converting some OGM and MKV files into AVIs and was wonderig if doing so affects the quality of the movie or anything else like that. Also is it smart if I'm doing this?

    It depends on what codec and bitrate you use.DivX and XviD are good AVI codecs.
    Lossless would be huffyuv,but you wouldn't want to use it if storing the files on your HD as they would use up too much room.

    ogm video streams are always avi compatible. With ffmpeg it is even possible to remux vorbis audio to an avi. mkv video however isn't always compatible.

    Best to leave it as is unless there is a reason to convert and I really wouldn't recommend vorbis in avi.
