I notice that when I burn most of my DVDs I end up having errors with them. They don't work on the computer or DVD player. I try to rip it back on my computer and it will not let me. The error comes back as 'Cyclic Redundancy Check.' What does this mean and is there a way I can stop it from happening?

  3. It would mean to me that perhaps you have some inexpensive media that isn't compatible with your drive. I used to get that all the time when using what I'd call "cheap" media, blanks that I bought because they were the cheapest price. They usually would end up with CRC errors on the outer edges of the discs.

'Cyclic Redundancy Check' error pops out when optical drive & software cannot read the data from a disc.
Better discs - better choice, but you should also check your optical drives.

Cylic Redundancy is an error checking scheme that does parity checking on data to insure that it is correct. That's why ripping a DVD is more critical of the source disc than simply playing it. A DVD player is more forgiving - It skips errors that it encounters. That doesn't prevent problems on players, it just reduces them. If you have a really bad disc, it will have problems on players too. This manifests itself as skipping, restarts and image breakup.

  8. Clean your disks.

Btw, I bet there are about 1,000 posts on CRCs if you want to search the board first.

Agree with everyone-check media for dirt etc and if too cheap.

CRC on retail discs can be down to Sony ArcoSS causing drives to spin haphazard and causing app not to read data 100%, thus giving that error reading.

  10. One other thing to check, your handling habits.

Bottom of the disc needs to be pristine condition.

Fingerprints dust etc will cause problems burning by either blocking the laser or diffusing it. Bad handling can cause the best media to have bad burns.

Have you tried verifying right after burning? That can usually be done by a good burning application... IE Nero, DVD Decrypter, Roxio. by choosing verify when you go to burn.

    Good luck

    Got another problem...

Trying to burn an ISO, but I can't. I've used about 4 DVDs here and they were all in good condition. On DVD Decrypter I still get an 'Unrecovered Read Error' and DVD Shrink says it has a Cyclic Redundancy Check. Maybe it could be the discs themselves? These aren't exactly good quality DVD-R's.

You've already answered your own question. If the dvd media that you're using is crappy cheap stuff then you'll have problems burning them. Why use cheap ass dvd media when there are so many sales for good quality dvd media like VERBATIM which is on sale at BEST BUY, 50 PACK for $17.99.

Also it would be helpful if you posted your computer specs. in your profile that way members can see what brands of components you have in your computer. Most dvd manufacturers have firmware upgrades to their dvd burners to keep up with the new dvd media that's produced. You could upgrade the firmware of your dvd burner to be more compatiblie with the cheap dvd media. In my opinion why use cheap ass dvd media when good quality dvd media is out there at reasonable prices.

I'm not a big person on burning DVDs so my knowledge was...limited

Once I run out of these ones, I'll definitely go for the higher quality stuff like Verbatim.
