  1. I am thinking of getting a Maxtor SATA hard drive but am not sure whether or not this is a good idea when it comes to capturing video from a Sky Digibox,S-Video with my ATI 9800 AIW card.I would use either VirtualDub or WinDVR for capture.

The reason I ask whether or not I should stick with an IDE drive or change to SATA is because I am sure i have read in older posts on this site that SATA drives can be problematic when capturing.

    Am I right?

    Thanks.

EIDE is a no-brainer. SATA may have problems with motherboard SATA HDD controllers.

If that happens, you will either need new drivers or a PCI SATA HDD controller card.

I don't know what all is in my Dell 8400, as far as chipsets/drivers, but I'm running two sata drives, and I've been capturing to a Maxtor 250gb sata drive for over 6 months now with no issues at all. I've captured 6 hours straight of vhs tape, edited, encoded, and burned, all with no issues at all.

But a minority of others have reported problems with SATA capture especially when using motherboard RAID configurations..

Great, your motherboard drivers\SATA HDD controllers must be fine then.
As you can see in my computer details,I have a Gigabyte motherboard with all the latest BIOS and drivers ect... installed.Dont know whether it works with SATA for capture until I try I suppose

That is the rub unless you can find others with the same drivers that got it to work. I'm just saying there is a sustained capture risk with SATA but not much risk with EIDE. Everything else should work.

I don't consider SATA a risk. Back as it was first coming out? Yes, there were some headaches. Now? Nope, at least not for me.
