Sounds like its time to either:

    (a) Update the iPod's Firmware with the latest updater
    or
    (b) erase and re-install the the iPod's operating system.

A bad checksum happens because the device that
is being polled cannot properly " talk" at the moment,
and instead defaults to the error "bad checksum".
Could be that most likely it is a bad FW cable, but more often than not,
it is the FW port on the iPod that either needs to be reset
or updated via firmware to make it talk to the host device.

    Don't fret it.
    I've owned my iPod since 2002 ( a second gen 10GB)
and I've had to reformat it at least twice, to fix
    a firewire issue.
    it happens.
