Hello. I purchased a TV show from iTunes because I wanted to make iPhone ringtones out of it. I've really never had any problem making ringtones out from any format of video or audio. However, the show is in .m4v format and apparently protected. It will not work with the ringtone maker, iRinger. I've tried using Any Video Converter Pro, and no matter what I do, I can't seem to convert it to any format that will work with iRinger. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything illegal, as I have no intention of distributing the show in any way, and I purchased and downloaded it legally. It's just for personal use, and I really only purchased it because there were some lines that I wanted to turn into ringtones. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could guide me in the direction of some free software I could use to convert m4v to mp3 or something similar. Thank you.

The video is indeed protected, and protected well. If you are intent on decrypting you can search for information on Requiem and which versions of that program work with which versions of iTunes, but I would not recommend as it will suck a lot of time to get it to work. Since you are only interested in the soundtrack of the program for ringtones, I would simply get a cable to connect your headphone jack with your mic jack, play the video in iTunes and record with your favorite audio capture app. Edit that file to select the part you want for the ringtone.

  3. Since itunes audio files are usually burnt to a disc and easy to get around the protection apparently it's harder for tvshowsd or video's and you just need the audio well if your using win7 open accessories sound recorder if no device is present select stereo mix under recording then start recording and play the file.

Thanks for the tips guys. Unfortunately, they don't really help me, as I don't have a microphone and I understand that you lose quality by attempting to record in such a way. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

You purchased the right to WATCH the show in iTunes and on approved Apple devices. That's why it's so locked down.

Plus, you're trying to break a copy-protection which is also illegal in itself. However, here's a suggestion... first, tell us what computer you using. It sounds like Mac since you mentioned iRinger (and it seems like EVERY Mac program starts with "i"). Second, go around iTunes if you can. I've got a couple of nice themesong 'tones by borrowing the DVD from the library and pulling from there. It still took three or four steps but much easier.

Have you tried doing a screen capture while the movie is playing using something like camstudio.

I'm not using a Mac. It's a Dell, running Windows 7 64 bit. Actually, I already have the DVD of the show as well, but that's protected too and I can't figure out how to rip it to my computer. I bought the show on iTunes because I can usually make ringtones from iTunes songs with iRinger. Obviously videos are a different story. Again, thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll take a look at camstudio and see if that helps me and then I'll report back.
