What about DVD-Rom? or DVD-Ram? Does it read either of those fine? Which drive model?

  3. My old Lite-on DVCD-Rom could not read +R discs -R it was fine with I think the Nero Info Tool can read your drives firmware and report what sort of discs it can read

Do you mean that you can read CDs or other types of DVD Media? Can it read comercial DVDs?

If you can no longer read DVDs but still can read CDs then more than likely your DVD laser is dead.

It happened to me from one disc to the next. No warning whatsoever!

CD's and DVD's are totally seperate. Does the drive read pressed/commercial discs (like movies)? If it doesn't then your drive is likely dead.
