  1. Hi guys,
Is there any way of playing a DivX file with a subtitle, without adding it permanently on the .avi ?
I have a Philips DVP642 and this one plays DivX great. I have some movies in DivX format and want to put them all on a DVD without converting them to DVD (mpeg2) and multiplexing with the subtitles.

  2. Same way as for an XVID, Hit Sub then Choose Movie,or it might be the other way around. Just burn everything as Data.

  3. What format is the subtitle suppose to be ?
So, I burn a DivX and the subtitle (in what format?) as data offcourse on the DVD and it plays ok on the player ?
What if you have two or more movies ? How will the player know which subtitle to choose ?

  4. choose the external subtitle file you want to load, by selecting it and pressing the Subtitle button on your remote, before playing the movie.

  5. OK, I tested it and here's the "report":
-first, it looks very unstable; I mean if I fast forward it's loosing it.
-I don't know which format is ok; I burned along with the movie the same subtitle in 6 formats but the player had seen only 3 and accept only one when selecting it (I don't know which format was the one accepted).
Conclusion: if this is everything and I'm not missing something....it's not worth it....better convert in dvd and have multiple subtitles, stable, etc.
If anyone knows what is the format that the player understands, please post it here; or if there is something else that we should know about subtitles on Divx movies, separate from the movie.

  6. accept SRT, SUB, and SMI. no graphical formats (SUB/IDX) are supported

  7. Thanks a lot.
It was helpfull but it looks like DivX with separate subtitles is not the best option. It's just not reliable, too unstable; you just have to watch the movie from begining to end without stop because it's losing the subtitle if you stop.
