  1. Any ideas why the big price drop at once?
I just purchased 200 from Rima @ $39.00 per hundred 9/01/05. Now they are down to $33.99 per hundred. Never known Rima to drop that much that soon. To be sure the 8X media will be around for a long time coming.
Anyway a great deal from a reliable company and brand.

edit> Just noticed the +R is still $39. /hundred. I have only purchased the -R.

  2. I would not be so sure that 8X media will be around for that long. Verbatim has already announced that they will be discontinuing all but 16X media. Carrying only one speed will cut their costs and their idea is that you can burn 16X at 8X on older burners.

I would expect that TY will follow suit.

Yeah, Taiyo Yuden keep dropping 8x DVD media, now is $29.9 for 100 pack http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-r-media.html. Probably they want to transfer major DVD media line to 16x.

  4. Thanks for the info guys...
I'm wondering if the quality of the 16X is as good as the 8X especially if burning the 16X at an 8X speed.

The supermedia price is a good one but their shipping is a little higher than Rima (for me on the east coast) so I'll probably stick with Rima not knowing much about SMStore and the trust I have from many past dealings with Rima.

But hey, if the 8x sticks around as long as the 4X have after being discontinued there should be 8x for a long time yet.

    Thanks again,
    NL

  5. Hope these are real TYs, not fakes. Did you try to get a media code?

People have been buying TY from Rima nd Super Media Store for years. They are reliable sellers. A media code isn't going to tell you if media is fake or not anyway; you have to look at stamper serials and the packaging. Super Media Store even goes through the trouble of showing how to identify genuine Taiyo Yuden media: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-how-to-tell-fake-or-real.html

I think people are getting paranoid about "fake" TY. To date I haven't heard of any US online store trying to pass off non-TY discs with a TY meida code as genuine made-in-Japan Taiyo Yuden media.

Meritline sells "High Quality" discs and they list them under the TY section and highlight the TY media code. They are not TY. This is as close as I have seen to selling fakes. You really have to look at the site to tell that these are not genuine TY.

For many burners, the 8X TY burns better at 12X than the 16X TY does at 12X. Some burners do better than others, but I am making sure I have plenty of 8X in stock for the future void.

Tri-color TY 8x FujiFilm 30 packs are back on sale for $8.94 at Staples. Mix here is ~50% Japanese TY and ~50% Taiwan.

They simply mention the media code; they've never claimed the discs are made by Taiyo Yuden in Japan, and no longer list the HQ media under the TY section: http://www.meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-media.html

*EDIT* HQ media is listed under its own section, and there is no longer any mention of a TY media code for anything (probably because the discs no longer use them, but now use MUST 003 code):
    http://www.meritline.com/hq-dvd-r-dvdr-blank-media.html

I still don't see how someone could think some off brand called "High Quality" would be made in Japan Taiyo Yuden media even if they have the TYG02 media code...

  11. Another price reduction. Now down to $32.99 / hundred.
Does anyone have any evidence that the TY 8X is to be soon discontinued?
A seven dollar per hundred drop in a month is strange to me.???
I've never received "less than perfect" TY's from Rima. Hope this is not the reason.
I'm sure lots of members here buy from Rima. If anyone knows someone at Rima I'm sure it would be appreciated to find out what's up with the 8X -R. I know I would.

BUy them if you need them, but I would say TY is not going anywhere. At most, it sounds like 16x will take its place, and I bet prices will be normal on them. Not clearance priced, but normal.

  13. ok...I'll probably stock up on the 8X.
But from above it sounds like 16X blanks may not burn that well at 8X speed. I've noticed not a lot of info on 16X speeds on current writers and I am satisfied with wirting at 8X. And it looks like around the forums 8X writing gives the best overall performance.
I've burned 8X media at 4X speeds sometimes and it looks great. Why would 16X media not do fine burned at 8X speed?
(trying to figure out how much to stock up on, here
    Thanks

I'm sure 16x at 8x or 12x would be fine.

It's 16x at 1x or 2x that has been known to act funny. This is a concern for DVD recorder owners that use write-once media. I use 1x, 2x, 2.4x an 4x DVD+RW/-RW mostly, so doesn't bother me any.

It also probably has to do with 16x burners' write strategies for 16x media not being optimized for lower speeds. After all, drive manufactuers are likely assuming (and rightfully so) that most people buying 16x burners and 16x media want to burn the discs at 16x. 8x media@8x on a 16x burner is probably better than 16x media@8x.

I'm not seeing that Tri-color TY 8x FujiFilm 30 packs at staples for $8.99
I hope it's not one of those mail-in rebates that they hope you don't turn in like 75% of the cases...
