seeing as the previous thread i started on dual core 2 vs x2 was locked, i have another question on this topic.
been reading various sites stating that intel duo core 2 and quad core will have a huge price drop on july 22nd. anyone know if infact this is legit? if so, im leaning now towards intel![]()

That link above tells you what processors will drop in price supposedly on July 22, 2007. The biggest drop looks like the Kensington quad core Q6600 $266.00. -
Considering I have always been an avid AMD user simply on the grounds of , price vs performance (or most bang for bucks) ... and my new system which is in my profile , use's intel ... I'm heading back to AMD ... and for one good reason ... intel still suck's .
Damn hot for the latest games though ... but it dosent count if they lower the price ... I aint buying .
I'll wait till AMD comes out with the next generation in cpu's before I build my next unit .
That means price is no option here ... what AMD wants ... I'll pay . -

Another match up point is the AMD 4400 to the Intel 6320 in performance, but with AMD chip around $100 compared $165 for Intel.
I'm about to buy something here but I'm waiting to see how much these Intel price cuts will be. The Intel chips have the best technology, period (and I've been an AMD fan for several years). If these cuts are in the 25% range then I will jump on the Intel bandwagon, at least until I see the new chip design from AMD expected 4Q?? this year. -
The one thing that is leaning me towards Intel is the fact that its "upgradable" as opposed to the X2 from what I understand. Like the AMD 6000+, it seems you can only get an AM2 board supporting max 800FSB whereas Intel is 1333MHz. I buy an Intel board I can always put a Quad Core CPU later in, AMD dies with this chip?
Another thing is the L2 cache, AMD 6000+ at 2MB? The Intel 4MB.. isn't there a difference there?
Last thing is the AMD thermal power is 125W and the Intel 6600 is 65W.. that to me is a huge difference in power, but don't know what's better... someone mention hot in games, I imagine the AMD would be better for gaming (as I do game), but 125W I have never seen a CPU that high. Is it a typo? -
No typo on the watts, AMD is now producing more energy efficient chips, even more then the Intel's, but have not had them at the 6000 level of speeds. AMD squeezed hard to get the 6000 with a huge increase in power consumption. Seems like an overclocked chip to me.
The motherboard issue with regard to FSB is somewhat fuzzy. The main advantage to a higher FSB speed for Intel is the result of a really bad design of the quad core system which is essentially two chips in one. In order to benefit from multi-thread tasking they had to speed up the FSB to get essentially the two-halves of the CPU to work together at a speed that matches their potential.
AMD (and likely Intel) next chip (Phenom) will produce a true quad core system that multi-threads without needing to go through the FSB. Therefore, the advantage of a higher FSB is negated.
With all that being said, and in my previous post, it looks like the new Intel duo 6750 chip is going to smoke the fastest AMD 6000 for about the same price if the released figures are correct of $180. However, the preorder prices are hovering around $210-$220, so we may have to wait a few weeks for the retailers to drop their prices. But wow what a chip. Intel has really heated up the war, or maybe dropped the A-bomb on AMD. Unless they can get their new Phenom chips to the market soon. -
As previously stated the x2 chip are cheap, but simply becoz they are the dying dregs of the barrel .. dont expect any sort of overclocking as they are already being pushed to the max (hence the hi temps) whereas the intels are a fairly new fresh design with plenty of overhead left in them. And the upgradeability, as wingfan stated , e6600 now and then in 18 months a q11000 (quad core at twice the speed.
And another thing, never never get your hopes up about a price drop , it never works out the way you want it.. the cheaper chips simply disappear to be sold in India or China, while you end up paying the same price for a slightly better chip. Saying that, I am hanging on to see what occurs after the price drops on 22.Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -
Well it's August 3 and NewEgg is selling Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPUs (retail) for $309 today. Down from >$500 a month or two ago.
Fry's has a bundle with a Q6600 (probably a bare OEM CPU) and an ECS P4M900T (via P4M900 chipset) for $299 this weekend. The motherboard probably isn't very good but the bundle is less than just the CPU at NewEgg.
