DVD recorder desktop with usb/ieee/ethernet to a PC

to download recordings on a computer.
does this machine exist ?

I think you may struggle to find one with DV out and i've never heard of a DVD recorder with USB/Ethernet. Looks like you are stuck with using re-writable discs to transfer to your pc.

Isn't that DVR ? Not just reader or player... Digital Video Recorder (not same as DVD Recorder)

So far I never heard of DVD Recorder with ability to copy recorded files "as is" from HDD to PC.

Older Pioneer 625 had IEEE1394 in/out, newer 530 has only in.

Toshiba makes recorders that include Ethernet connection but don't think you can use it to upload to PC actually.

The Panasonic DMR-E500H DVD recorder with 400 gig HD has an ethernet connection I believe.

My understanding is that this Ethernet connection can be used only to hook up 2 or more of these machines together. After that you can play content of HDD of any machine on another machine. So it is not used for copying to or from PC.

Older Pioneer 625 had IEEE1394 in/out, newer 530 has only in.

Pioneers DV IN/OUT is used for video signal transmition. Not for file copy. So signal from encoded mpeg2 file is at the time converted (loss) to DV AVI format and sent through connection to PC where you have to capture it in real time. Same goes other way arround. From PC you can send stream of DV AVI data that are internaly converted to mpeg2 and stored on HDD.

I think that you misunderstood what it does. "You can even stream MPEG4 videos and JPEG still images from the DMR-E500HS hard disk to your PC for viewing" means that you can watch content but you can not copy files. It is like watching streaming tv over internet. You can't copy source file that was used to stream that content.

In theory... yes you can. But I thought that your intention was "download recordings on a computer" or in my transaltion.... copy files without any additional loss in quality. And this can't be done. Yes you probably can (by using some special software) "capture" stream that was converted from original mpeg2 encoded file to mpeg4 encoded data stream.

The magic word there is viewing

Good idea... Just be aware of cluelessness of some "support" people that pick-up's support 800 lines It has been case here many times that 4 different phone calls resulted to 4 totaly different answers

the only thing they can do is to read what they are seeing on the panasonic website

Anyway.... I had no problem to locate Panasonics DMR-E500HS manual... Just use as model number DMR-E500 or DMRE500
