Every so often, one of my computers will write at 1X even when I'm using 4 or 8X media. It's very frustrating becasue it takes about 58 minutes to burn a 4.2 gig file. I usually unistall my burning software - power down - and then reinstall it. I'm not sure what causes it but it's a real pain when it happens.

No. Do you uninstall as soon as this happens, or only if it happens repeatedly ? Does it always fix the problem ?
If it only happened from time to time, I'd suspect the quality of the disk. If it happens often, and the reinstall of the burning software fixes the problem, then you have something going on that you need to address. Could be virii or spyware, could be a HDD going south.Read my blog here.

I've been using Ritek & Verbatium media. Sometimes it hap[pens only once and it fixes itself othertimes I have to unistall & reinstall. It's a mystery. The DVD burner is Sony's 530A. It's never happened with my Plextor.
