Seriously I think there are a few reasons OT has alot less traffic.

OT has a tendeceny over the last few years to escalate to the point of being something other then what the forum itself is. By that I mean, it gets a little crazy and out of control.

When that happens us mods attempt to pull it back into place, but usually it doesn't work. After that less subtle measures are taken.

These measures anger people, not because they themselves are unfair but because people don't like change. Because of this a few regulars leave.

This time however things were differernt, at least two as yoda called them "spin off" forums were formed and alot of regulars are now just Semi regulars at best.

Also OT is no longer publiclly readable, therefore most don't even know its here, if they join the sites they may or may not ever venture in.

Is this a bad thing? No not really. OT is here for the members to talk amonst themselves about things that are indeed Off Topic. Its still here for that.

The question to you is, what do you want to talk about?

Flaystus, believe it or not, I agree with you. It's the past and it's long dead. The question then becomes what do you want this OT to turn into?

Do you want it to be like it is now? Clean? Sterile? Open mainly to fresh blood who aply the same rules to off topic as they do to on topic threads? (It is nice to see this place so cleaned up, but on the other hand, it is kind of boring as well. I don't think having it both ways is possible. I think that's like having your cake and eating it too.)

Or do you want it to be like it was before? With those same people all coming back and being friends again, here, having all their issues with eachother sorted out? Granted, it might spill over to the on topic threads a little as well... (would that make it more fun or more of a headache?).

We all know what's needed to be done for either case. So the question is, what do you want?

There are not alot of people posting right now, but OT is not the point of this site. Its a side effect. If ones problems outshadows the others there is a problem.

If your asking me to pick between few post and insanty I pick a safe medium in between. Some people can handle that, they are gone now.

have the rest of the forums suffered as greatly as OT? As Flaystus mentioned OT is not the point of VH yet some seem to think it is . I know I didnt enjoy helping newbies as much as I did seeing as things are so much easier these days and I haven't burnt a DVD in over 2 years now. People just move on and the saga's were just a kick up the arse to most so they moved onto other things

these days, it's got next to **** all to do with the rules keeping people away as you can still have fun within the rules. That's why I'm still here and not at some gestapo run forum where you can't say BOO to someone (joke people, joke as I'm talking about the Pub!)

if you can't have the kind of 'fun' you want here then you know you can post just about anything at The Pub just like BJ_M does

There was something wrong. It had grown to a level that was not in line with the rest of the site. There are a million internet forums, if this place is boring because of OT your obviously not here for video any longer. So if your not here for video, and OT is that horrible why are you wasting your time?

Or buck up stop complaining and post to make it better. Thats all it takes is posting. Its not like this forum is ruled by some "internet superstars" and the place will collapse with out them. It was here before most of us, and likely it will be here after.

I'm sometimes suprised Baldrick hasn't given up on OT completely what with the hassel it creates just by being here. Goes to show how good a guy he is.

Meanwhile I think some members went off to form their own sites and thats awesome and fine by me. But this forum shouldn't be used as a way to drudge up the past over and over again.

Most that have left or don't frequent as much are probably not as interested in Video related stuff these days, I know I am. I used to live in a few DVD forums not just VH and most of my time online was spent in them posting, left right and centre. When I wasn't online I was digging deep within the DVD structure trying all different methods to do stuff

what people should realise is that the internet doesn't revolve around a few certain individuals now does it?

there's plenty of people that frequent OT but they don't post, only browse. It will only take a few fresh PW's to get this place buzzing again posting regularly with a few new threads now and then and then others will follow It's not easy but then again it's not hard to get people talking if you pick some interesting subjects

I have noticed that some members who sometimes (in fact regulary) pushed the boudaries of the old rules didn't like the fact they couldn't anymore with the new rules. Why?, you can still have a good heated disagreement within the rules so these people moaning about strict rules are talking shite basically. I don't see a problem with them at all unless you just want to name call, insult people and go looking for members to flame which is what some did

one real problem (not ones in peoples minds) I feel that is still 'lingering', is that some people here have issues with others due to what they have seen and read in the past. Apart from the obvious of members being from different forums elsewhere, I obviously understand some people having issues with me. Only a certain couple should really be bothered about my presence here and unless they lurk then they should have no issues. Some also think I've got a strange sense of humour but I'll get over it . The one thing I don't do is feel that someone else's presence means I can't participate in a forum unless I'm banned and we all know where I'm banned from

I think back to my early days here and I wandered into OT once and saw all these people chatting as a group and remember I felt like an outsider

the same people may never be here again but that doesn't mean it won't be the same atmosphere The topics don't have to be controversial at all as there's plenty of shit to talk about. I do notice that some people seem to only ever appear when there is controversy going on though

Wish granted. At least by me. The only reason I mentioned the past is because the thread title kind of drew a comparison to it. But I'm happy to let it go.


@virginva - give up, it's gotten to be too hard to make this place interesting again. Nobody cares anymore. They either don't care because they don't know eachother, they don't care because they don't see the point of hanging around a dvd site when the hobby itself is almost dead, or they don't care because they've been burned in the past by friendships and don't wish to be burned again. OT being dead doesn't bother them the way it bothers you. Your problem is that you still have hope that things will get better.

IMHO, my advice is to do as flaystus says and post more in OT if you wish to rekindle that old OT atmosphere, and if enough other people feel the same way as you do, they might post as well. But I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you because nowadays hope is more scarce around here than you think.

Best thing to do is to stick to the rest of the forum. At least the newbies care when someone helps to solve their problem for them. Grattitude is better than indifference.
