As to why I gave the thread lock warning it has nothing to do with toys going home.

Its that I at least recognise that a thread like this does nothing but stir up bad feelings and put off anyone new who may be thinking about posting in OT. I understand that this entire discussion solved nothing and hurts everything.

Yet almost every move a moderator here takes is attacked, no by general board members 9 out of 10 times but by an OT regular who gives excuses but in the end just doesn't want to see any change.

The point you seem to be missing Flaystus is that quite a number of regular visitors to the site would hang out in OT when the "rough and tumble" of the on-topic forums was getting to be a bit much. Maybe they'd just flamed a newbie (or whatever) and OT served the purpose of giving them somewhere to cool their heels with a bit of light-hearted humour, keeping people at the site IMHO. When OT was quiet, "OT regulars" would even venture out from their hidey-holes to help in the main forums.

OT went behind a login, so I really struggle to comprehend this notion of "keeping up appearances" and "not in the best interests of the general public" excuses that are meant to pass as some sort of reasoning (not that Baldrick needs to justify anything). If it's Baldrick's call, all good and well, but don't bullshit us with excuses. And personally I think it blows (or is that sucks ) that you're "taking your bat and ball and going home" when the conversation doesn't interest you any more (sound familiar to anyone ??? )

Its funny that this thread survives while people talk about there not being post. Meanwhile there are post.

You might not know why but I think I can explain it. It's about hope. Hope that things will get better, which entices people to post. That hope is being brought about by this thread. This thread shows everyone that we can talk about anything without strict rules or reprocussions. And it draws interest from those who haven't posted in a while because we're all trying to figure things out. To get onto the same page.

Yes, you have some good points Flaystus, things need to be done in moderation and people should have self moderated themselves more in the past. But Glockjs has a good point as well, in that people should come back and make this place fun again. You both sort of want the same thing... it's just trying to get the details and method straight on how to do it that's the confusing part. And this thread is helping to communicate what the best course of action would be to hammer all this out.

BTW for the first time I'm gonna give advance warning. Thread lock is likely imminent.

It's not about stirring shit, it's about testing the waters. It's been so long after the fact, but it's been the same - stagnant- for all that time. OT was still dead before this thread became controversial. Now that people are talking about the past instead of AVOIDING talking about it, it makes some people relax and think there's a little more tolerance here and that makes them post in other threads as well, so the board picks up. I don't want to talk about the past Flaystus, I just want the assurance that I'm allowed to do it if I want to. It's only a freedom thing.

No, it's only recently that I've given up. I'm trying real hard not to care if this place becomes fun again, but I've not quite succeeded yet. I just need more time to convince me to give up hope completely. But right now, things can still change. I still have hope. (damn you zapper! :P)

You've brought up some good points that I hadn't thought of before that I now happen to agree with. It would be a shame to end the dialogue now as this thread provides a chance for everyone to come to an agreement on how things are to proceed. You want people to self moderate. I agree. But they can't do that if they are not following the same path. You think the post whore should be discouraged from coming back yet glockjs doesn't. There is a difference of opinion there of how to resurrect OT and all we have to do is come to an agreement, a meeting in the middle, so that we can all be on the same page and then self moderate successfully in the future and go on. It's not that people disagree, it's that people don't realize that some want different things than others and are going in different directions. We're all friends here. I'm sure we can compromise.

Eventually something popular is going to spring up and all of the tangents that go along with them (kind of the shotgun effect, blast away enough and you are gonna hit something)

By "it" I don't mean what happend in the past. It's only things that continue to happen to this day that concern me. Your warning to lock the thread for instance. Locking threads for questionable reasons happend in the past but was almost going to happen yet again today. This is not a critism of you or your job, I'm just letting you know how others may perceive that action. They might take it as preferential cencorship, even though I know damn well it's not. I know you're a reasonable man Flaystus, so are all the rest of the mods. But people can misunderstand actions so easily without dialogue and discussion. I just want the freedom to keep the dialogue going.

There are two prevailing attitudes in OT right now and they are in conflict. The first is this:

...and the second is this:

I don't know which attitude to support. I supported the second one in the past, but pressure from the first one was too much for me to take so I bowed to it. All I want is a consensus from everyone as to which way it will be and I think that's what everyone else who's stopped posting here wants as well.

Yes I do think this thread has got people posting because they see the two points of view squaring off and they feel a resolution might be possible. This gives them hope. This is why they make the effort to post now after all this time.

As far as blurb threads, in general I don't like 'em very much. I don't like the idea of someone coming to a forum and going "wow what a nice fark ripoff their forum has here" cause thats what it is. Posting a new story unless you really want to discuss it on some level beyond silly jokes is mindless. It takes no input and no thought, its copy and past. When you put on input in you get no input out.
