  1. I came accross a xvid that my LG 418 will only play the video. No audio.
    Real Player plays both audio/video.
I believe it is lacking the audio codecs.
I used nero to create a vcd, still no audio.

    Suggestions ?

XviD has nothing to do with audio. It is a video codec only.

So what audio does it use?

  3. I'm not sure what type of audio it is. How can I tell ?

Its a xvid from Germany, if that helps.

  4. Use Gspot or AVI AVICodec to get information about your file.

Note that a lot of Divx/DVD players won't play MP3 audio at very low bitrates (like 56k).

  5. I used AVIcodec:

    Audio : 25 MB, 83 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels,
    0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

  6. The bitrate may be too low. I know my Liteon 2002 will play 96 kbps, and that it won't play 56 kbps. I don't know where the cutoff is.

  7. How can I increase the bitrate ?

  8. Rencode the audio. Try using VirtualDub. Open the file with VirtualDub then:

    1) Video -> Direct Stream Copy.
    2) Audio -> Full Processing Mode.
    3) AUdio -> Compression...
    4) Select audio compression codec, MP3?
    5) Set audio bitrate to CBR 128 or more.
    6) Save as AVI.

The video will simply be copied from the input to the outout. The audio will be recompressed.

  9. This is my first time using VirtualDub.
When open the file I get a improper VBR message and am asked do I still want to rewrite the header.
Click yes, and I get anothe message, telling me only direct stream copy is available.

I see on the tool bar where I can select direct stream copy, but I can't seem to find how to:

    2) Audio -> Full Processing Mode.
    3) AUdio -> Compression...
    4) Select audio compression codec, MP3?
    5) Set audio bitrate to CBR 128 or more.
    6) Save as AVI.

It sounds like you are using VirtualDubMod. Do you get the second message if you click No instead? In my experience it usually works better (audio sync issues) if you select No anyway. You may have to try both.

With VirtualDubMod the audio procedure is a little different:

    2) Streams -> Stream List
    3) Right click on the audio stream in the list and select Full Processing Mode.
    4) Right click again and select Compression...
    5) Select compression codec and then it's settings.
    6) Save as AVI...

  11. I selected CCITT u-Law, 48,000 kHz,8bit,stereo, 94KB/s.
    Saved as AVI.
Burned it as a CD data disc.
    Same result, no sound.

Is there a certain compression codec and setting I should select ?

  12. Try an MP2 or MP3 codec at 128 (or more) kbps constant bitrate. I didn't specify which codec to use because I wasn't sure which codecs you might have. You might see MP3, Lame MP3, Mpeg Audio Layer 2, Mpeg Layer 3, etc.

CCITT u-law is a telephony codec. It's not surprising that it doesn't work with a Divx/DVD player!

  13. I only get a mp3 codec option, with the highest bitrate 56kBit/s.
Is there away to add codecs ?

In VirtualDub or VirtualDubMpg, be sure the 'Enable audio/video interleaving' is checked. If it is not, this player will not play audio.

I could not find this option in VirtualDubMod.

    Chas

    Download and install Lame MP3:

  16. I got the codec to work. Saved the AVI and then confirmed the audio had been changed. I ran it thru AVIcodec.
    Burned it to a CD.

    Rats !

No audio when playing on LG-418.

    What next ?

  17. Do you have any AVI files with audio that does play? Try making this one match the specs of those.

You could try converting to 44,100 Hz with VirtualDub. Add the following after step 3 from eariler:

3b) Right click on audio stream in the list and select Conversion...

3c) Set sampling rate to 44100, precision to 16 bits, channels to stereo, and checkmark High Quality.

  18. I hate being a pain, and I'm grateful for the help.
    But still no luck !

Converted the audio to 44100, precision to 16 bits, channels to stereo, and checkmark High Quality.
    Confirmed with AVIcodec.

Still no audio when playing on the LG.

I am converting to 191kps,44100, 2 channel. This is what another xvid has that plays without problem.

I don't think this lastest encoding is going to work.

    Any other suggestions ?

  19. If you can't get Lame MP3 to work you might try WMA 2 -- if you see it in the audio codec list. I think LG players can play that.

    Hey pinetop,

Did you try the suggestion in my previous post? If you have then disregard the rest of the post.

Check the Help/Contents/Audio interleaving in VirtualDub. It explains why Divx and Xvid files have to have 'Enable video/audio interleaving' enabled to playback on standalone CD/DVD players. If not enabled they will playback ok in a media player on a computer.

I had a LG-418 and ran into the same problem. After reading the manual under Divx limations which stated that it only accepted Dvix files that were Inerleaved, I was able to solve the problem. Same specs applies to my LinkPlayer2 player.

BTW: I use Mp3 48kb 24hz stereo and have no problems. Also to access the interleave option in VirtualDubMod, right click on the audio stream, choose 'interleaving'.

    Hope this helps,

    Chas

  21. A/V interleave is enabled by default but I guess it's possible he changed it at some point.

  22. I checked, interleave was enabled.
I dub another copy of the file with VirtualDubMod.
Is there away to check if the interleave is working ?

I believe the LG will play Lame MP3, I have have other xvid files with Lame MP3 audio and they play ok.

I'd suggest AVIMuxGUI for muxing. Use the mp3 standalone profile.

I downloaded a Divx trailer at http://trailers.divx.com/WB/BatmanBegins_1.avi and works in my Linkplayer2. For audio, it uses Mp3 128kbs 44.1khz. The file is 10 megs.

If you try it and still no audio, I will try it on my LG-418 at work tomorrow.

    Regards,

    Chas

  25. Megahurts,

I downloaded the Batman trailer. The audio plays fine on the LG.

    Celtic,

I haven't tried AVIMuxGUI, what does it do ?

To check the file for interleave, open the file with the Hex Editor under Tools in VirtualDub. Press Ctrl-r and open the 'AVI Data Block' and you will see a list of 'Chunks'. Open a Chunk and if there are 2 streams (0,1) per chunk then it's interleaved. Non interleave has only 1 stream (0) per chunk.

If you use the Batman trailer you will see that it is interleaved.

    Hope this helps,

    Chas

  27. Gspot will tell you if an AVI file is interleaved.

    Junkmalle,

I tried several programs and GSpot was one of them. It displayed the same info for a interleaved and non-interleaved file.

    Am I missing something?

    Regards,

    Chas

  29. Might be a Gspot version issue. I'm using 2.52 beta 01:

Note the red arrow pointing at the line that says "Interleave:..." If the file isn't interleaved that line isn't there.

  30. The chunks either have stream 1 or stream 0.
