  1. My LG GSA-4163B will not recognize discs anymore. When I put in a DVD to back up nothing happens. When I try to put in blank media, nothing happens. The device manager says the drive is working properly, but it won't read anything. I have just upgraded the firmware to 105. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You can try flashing back to the older firmware, but you may have fried it already. Try this firmware:

  3. If I flash back to 104 will that damage the drive? Should I go back farther than 104? Also, when I click your link and then click a firmware link on the site the page cannot be displayed? What are your thoughts? Thanks.

I just clicked the link and downloaded the 104 version...not sure why you can't. Have your tried DVDinfopro or dvd identifier to see if the drive sees the firmware? Did it fail immediately after the 105 flash?

  5. My drive stopped working on Friday and I had never upgraded the firmware. I put 105 on this morning and that did not work. Is it bad to go from no updated firmware to 105, do I need to install them in order to get to 105? Also, I tried dvd identifier and it said it was unable to initialize the disk, logical unit not ready. What do you think?

How old is the drive? If it is less than a year old chances are it is under warranty. If not, then it maybe time to get a new drive. The firmware won't help if the laser is bad. You can try cleaning the drive.

  7. The drive is less than a year old. After trying everything you and some other threads have mentioned, I think it is the laser. Thank you for all your help. My next step will be to contact the retailer/manufacturer. Thanks again.

Just don't mention anything to them about flashing the firmware, just say it died and leave it at that. They won't replace it if you tell them you flashed the firmware, infact it is best to put the orginal firmware version back in it before you take it back.
