I've been trying out the Divx Converter from www.divx.com and it works great at making a divx copy of a DVD I've reduced down using DVD Shrink, but it doesn't work with DVD VOB files which doesn't make any sense to me. Their forum also doesn't work. Has anyone been able to rip a divx copy directly from a DVD using this program? Has anyone tried this new ratDVD as well? Thanks.

AutoGK does a very good conversion. If you want a little easier with a little lower quality, (Mostly less options) try FairUse Wizard.

The DivX container is based on avi. It is basically just a hack/extension to add subtiles, chapters, menus, tags, etc. If you don't use any of the extra features then yes it is basically just an avi renamed.

AVI is a container format. Divx is just one form of AVI. As is DV, Xvid and others. I use AutoGK rarely, though it is a good program, it does take some learning. For easy conversions FairUse Wizard works well for me. It will convert a unencrypted DVD file directly to Xvid or Divx. Very easy.
If you have an encrypted DVD (Most commercial DVDs), you will have to rip it to your hard drive with a program like DVDFab Decrypter or DVD Decrypter to bypass the encryption. I use it with my backups created with DVDShrink as a easy way to convert a DVD file to a ~700Mb Xvid video. -
DivX is both a codec and a container.
An XviD avi would be one form of avi. XviD itself is just a video codec. A raw XviD stream has nothing to do with avi, neither does an XviD mp4. So just because something is "XviD" doesn't make it a type of avi. Same goes for DV, you could have a quicktime DV file.
