  1. IT BURNS DVDS FINE BUT WONT RECOGNIZE CD MEDIA. WHEN I TRY TO BURN A CDR IT SAYS THE DISC DRIVE IS EMPTY or the cd isnt blank. Ive tried multiple cds from different cases.

ITS NOT THE APP CAUSE ALL OF THEM SAY THE SAME THING, COULD IT BE A DRIVER IM MISSING. IF SO, WHERE WOULD I GET IT FOR WINDOWS XP? THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. sorry for the capitals

  2. If you can burn DVD but not CD-R then I don't think it's a driver problem. What kind of burning software do you use?

Has this problem recently occured or have you always have this problem? Have you done anything special with your computer when this problem occured?

It's hard to figure out what causes this problem as you haven't give us much information. It could be the burner that has som error in it. It could be a driver related problem.

Here is what you can do.

    1. Check that you have ASPI driver installed and working properly
    2. Check if there's a newer firmware for your burner
    3. Test your burner in another computer to find out if the problem is in the burner itself or in Windows.

  3. Thanks for the response. My original cd burner crashed so I bought this lite-on & installed it. I was able to burn 1 cdr w/nero before it only started to burn dvdrs.

As far as apps I use are nero, musicmatch, windows media player, roxio and they all end up stating the same problem.

And how do I check your 1st 2 suggestions?

  4. How long have you had it? I'd exchange it as defective if you can or else call Lite-On..... This drive should not exhibit this problem.

    Good Luck

I had the exact same fault. I took the Lite-On back to the shop and was given an AOpen DUW1608/ARR as a replacement. That was even worse so I went elsewhere and bought an NEC ND-3520A.

Except for the refusal to acknowledge CD-R's, the Lite-On was quite good. certainly better than the AOpen but not as good as the NEC. If I'd known how bad the AOpen was going to be I'd have hung onto the Lite-On 1693 and used a different writer for CD-R's.

The shop from which I purchased the Lite-On (unboxed) had a whole batch returned and as far as I could tell there is no way of repairing them at an economic cost within a reasonable timeframe.

  6. Hmm... We haven't had any returns or complaints on the Lite-On burners. I used a earlier model SOHW - 1633S not sure with no problems burning CDs and DVDs. I'm using it a machine here at work right now. OF course with this machine I've never had good luck on any drive at its top speed. Maybe the SIS chipset....

But it isn't my computer except to use and I'm lucky they let me put in what I want to use during slow moments... I've used it to make compilations of video clips and backups so they are pretty good that way.

    Cheers

  7. motleycool To check the ASPI drivers, use the Nero InfoTool and go to the ASPI tab. There you can check if ASPI drivers are installed and working properly.

To check your FirmWare go to the Drive Tab in Nero InfoTool and look for the FirmWare version. After that you could take a look at this site http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm and check if your drive is in the list and if there's a newer FirmWare avaliable.

It isn't the drivers since a) The Lite-On uses Windows default driver and b) the device can still read and write perfectly to DVD's. It is either the CD lens or CD laser which is stuffed. The only solution is to return the writer under guarantee for an exchange or refund.
